Palaung village in Hsipaw, Shan State, Myanmar: mr.hotsia's journey to the heart of the tribe

When talking about Myanmar, where I, mr.hotsia, have traveled to experience, it’s not just the main tourist cities like Yangon or Bagan, but delving deep into small indigenous tribal villages is an unforgettable experience. This time, I traveled toPalaung villagenear the town of Hsipaw in Shan State, where life continues simply and closely tied to traditional culture.

Traveling to this village is not as easy as it seems. Hsipaw is a small town located on an ancient trade route in northeastern Myanmar. I chose to travel by bus from a nearby major city, then rented a bicycle or motorcycle to reach the Palaung village situated in winding terrain full of hills. Although the route was challenging, the scenery along the way filled with tea plantations and lush forests made me forget the fatigue for a moment.

The Palaung village stands out with traditional wooden houses built from bamboo and hardwood, with thatched roofs mixed with natural materials found locally. I spoke with villagers who mostly still wear their traditional costumes featuring beautiful handwoven patterns and bright colors. The Palaung people are warm and friendly. Although English is not widely spoken, body language and smiles bridged our hearts well.

Each day here focuses on sustainable agriculture, growing tea, corn, and various vegetables suited to the mountain climate. The villagers still preserve the hand-picking method of tea leaves, a wisdom passed down through generations. For tea lovers like me, mr.hotsia, tasting fresh leaf tea brewed by the villagers in the village’s shady atmosphere is a must. The flavor is richer and fresher than any tea I’ve had in big cities.

While walking through the village’s small alleys, I saw children happily playing and elders sitting chatting and sharing life stories. This simplicity gives a true sense of peace, unlike the hustle and bustle I have experienced in big cities.
