Eating Burmese Food by Hand at Pathein, the Riverside Flavor City on the Irrawaddy River
Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today, I invite everyone to embark on a journey to experience the lifestyle and local flavors of Pathein, one of Myanmar's important cities located on the main Irrawaddy River. Although Pathein is not as famous as Bagan or Mandalay, it has its own charm with a traditional riverside fresh market and the unique, fun experience of eating Burmese food by hand that you definitely shouldn't miss.
Pathein Market on the Irrawaddy River - Community and Fresh Food
I arrived at Pathein Market in the morning. The air was still cool and soft sunlight filtered through the rowing boats floating on the Irrawaddy River. This market bustled with local villagers buying fresh produce including vegetables, fruits, fish, and freshly caught seafood daily. There are both ready-to-eat food stalls and vendors preparing a variety of local Burmese dishes for us to taste.
What impressed me especially was trying to eat Burmese food by hand here, a traditional eating method that has been strongly preserved. Eating by hand allows us to connect closely with the food, both in taste and the texture of fresh local ingredients.
Must-Try Dishes in Pathein
One dish I had to try wasMohinga(Mohinga) a rich fish soup considered Myanmar's national dish, served with rice noodles or vermicelli. The flavor is rich and smooth, perfectly blended with local spices and herbs. Another dish found in the market was crispy fried tilapia served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce, made from truly fresh fish caught from the Irrawaddy River.
There was also hot sticky rice with chicken curry, featuring a rich curry paste and an intoxicating aroma. I, mr.hotsia, tried eating by hand with the locals in the market. I must say this experience made me feel even closer to Burmese culture.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle by the Irrawaddy River
Pathein is located on the important Irrawaddy River of Myanmar. This river is over 2,000 kilometers long and plays a vital role in transporting goods and serving as a travel route for people in the country. I have previously written about the origin of the Irrawaddy River inKachin Statewhich is in the northern part of the country, where the Mekha and Mali rivers converge to form the large Irrawaddy River.
Here in Pathein, I saw cargo boats and fishing boats bustling back and forth. Local fishermen still use traditional fishing methods, including nets and hooks, creating a charming and warm riverside lifestyle scene. This simplicity and naturalness are the charms of Pathein that I want to invite everyone to experience.
Travel and Eating by Hand Tips from mr.hotsia
If you travel to Pathein, I recommend preparing yourself to embrace new experiences with Burmese food here, especially eating by hand, a custom that helps us feel closer to the food and locals. Don't forget to wash your hands before and after eating. Some market stalls provide hand-washing water.
To get to Pathein, you can take a bus or taxi conveniently from Nyaung-U or Mandalay. If you are interested in exploring other cultures in Myanmar, I recommend readingFood in Bagan, MyanmarandHorse Cart Rides in Bagan, Myanmarto understand the diverse lifestyles and flavors in this country.
