Stroll along the Irrawaddy Riverside Walking Street in Pathein, a city of riverside lifestyle in Myanmar
When talking about Myanmar's main river, the Irrawaddy River (also known as Ayeyarwady River) is probably the first name that comes to many minds. This river, over 2,000 kilometers long, flows through the heart of Myanmar and has long been the lifeline sustaining the people along its banks. I, mr.hotsia, recently had the opportunity to visitthe Irrawaddy Riverside Walking Street in Patheinwhich is not far from the lower mouth of the Irrawaddy River. It is a connecting point between the river and the impressive local way of life that is unforgettable.
Pathein is a city that many may not be as familiar with as Bagan or Mandalay, but for me, walking along the riverside walking street here reveals the real life of the Burmese people perfectly blended with the tranquility of the Irrawaddy River. This street is not just a market or a shopping area; it is a place full of cultural atmosphere and the lifestyle of the locals.
The Charm of Riverside Markets and Local Life
I leisurely walked along the riverside walking street beside the Irrawaddy River in the evening. The scent of local food immediately filled the air. Small restaurants lined around the market each offered signature dishes with authentic Burmese flavors, whether it was rich chicken curry or hot steamed rice served with Hilsa fish, a very important fish in this region known for its sweet and rich flesh. I have previously written about Hilsa fish in Bangladesh, but here in Myanmar, it is equally famous.
Pathein's riverside walking street is not just a food market but also a place gathering local products, handicrafts, and handmade goods reflecting the community's way of life. I saw locals selling Pathein's famous paper umbrellas and beautifully patterned handwoven fabrics in a simple yet warm atmosphere.
Travel and Atmosphere Along the Irrawaddy River
Traveling to Pathein is not difficult. I chose to take a boat from a nearby town to experience the riverside lifestyle of the Irrawaddy River directly. The boat passed small villages lining the riverbanks. The atmosphere was peaceful and refreshing because this river has been the main lifeline nourishing the people here since ancient times.
The Irrawaddy River originates from the northernmost part in Kachin State, where I previously explored the river's source in Myitkyina (read more in the articleExploring the Source of the Irrawaddy River, Kachin State). That is the river's origin, flowing through diverse landscapes before reaching Pathein in the lower river area, where the riverside atmosphere changes according to the lifestyle of the river people.
Pathein People and the Irrawaddy River
What impressed me most was the strong bond between the people of Pathein and the Irrawaddy River. They live simply and rely on the river for fishing, transportation, and trade. The riverside market I walked through was filled with voices of negotiation, rowing boats, and the aroma of fresh food caught from the river. A day in Pathein will make you understand the true meaning of living in harmony with nature.
Must-Try Street Food
At Pathein's riverside walking street, I didn't miss trying the local food fully, whether it was flavorful chicken biryani or curries using Burmese spices different from those I had in Bagan or Pagan (which I have written about inFood Experiences in Bagan, Pagan). And of course, Hilsa fish is a must-try dish. I recommend trying it fried crispy or grilled with local spices. I guarantee you will love the taste as much as I did.
Nighttime Atmosphere by the River
As the sunlight fades, the riverside walking street becomes a gathering place for locals and tourists who come to enjoy the breeze and the view. Soft traditional music plays, and shops start to light dimly, creating a warm and romantic atmosphere. I, mr.hotsia, sat sipping tea while watching the river view, feeling as if I had traveled back in time to experience a simple yet meaningful way of life.
