Garlic Dance Pathein (Pathein), an ancient city on the Irrawaddy River
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to visit Pathein, an important southern port city of Myanmar, located on the large Irrawaddy River flowing through the heart of the country. I must say this visit to Pathein was not just an ordinary trip but a true experience of local life, villagers' ways, and unique culture.
Among the things that impressed me the most was the “Garlic Dance,” a folk performance full of fun and vibrant colors. Each dance move tells stories of villagers connected to farming, garlic cultivation, and riverside life in depth. I watched this performance at Pathein’s annual festival, held to promote local culture and attract tourists from around the world.
Riverside Atmosphere and Pathein Market
Pathein is a city with a bustling market along the Irrawaddy River that stays lively all day. This market is the trading center for local villagers, featuring local products, fresh seafood, and locally grown fruits and vegetables. I strolled around the market and tried many local dishes I had never tasted before, including hot sticky rice, fresh fish cakes, and a unique Burmese dipping sauce with a rich flavor.
Interestingly, I saw villagers in colorful traditional outfits selling goods with laughter and friendliness towards tourists like me, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that made me want to connect more with this community. Travel and Lifestyle in Pathein
Traveling to Pathein is not very convenient unless you come from a nearby major city. I chose to take a boat from Nyaung-U, where I stayed during this trip. Cruising the Irrawaddy River in the morning allowed me to see fishing villages living simply by the riverbanks and flat rice fields surrounded by small mountains—a beautiful and peaceful scene like stepping into another world.
Here, people still use traditional transportation methods such as rowboats and long-tail boats for carrying goods and passengers. I took a boat ride to enjoy the view and talked with locals, learning their stories more deeply. I also had the chance to experience fishermen’s work using fishing tools passed down through generations.
Connecting with the Culture and Nature of Kachin State
Although Pathein is located south of the Irrawaddy River, my journey in Myanmar did not end there. I also visitedKachin Statelocated in the northern part of the country, the source of the Irrawaddy River. Kachin State is full of high mountains and nature that remains abundant. Visiting there gave me a clearer overall picture of how the Irrawaddy River flows through diverse lands and cultures.
For those interested in nature and the diverse lifestyles of Myanmar’s people, Kachin State is an equally fascinating destination as Pathein. I recommend studying the stories of the Irrawaddy River and Kachin State together on your trip to better understand Myanmar’s context.
Additional Tips for Visiting Pathein
Before traveling to Pathein, don’t forget to research transportation and accommodation in advance. Although the city is not as large as Nyaung-U or Bagan, there are simple lodgings and local restaurants to choose from. I recommend trying street food and fully experiencing the villagers’ way of life because that is the true charm of Myanmar here.

In Summary…
Pathein is not just an ordinary port city but a place that tells the story of the great Irrawaddy River, along with the culture and lifestyle of Myanmar people blending ancient and modern elements. Visiting this city made me, mr.hotsia, feel the warmth of the people and the beauty of nature that still preserves its original charm impressively. For anyone wanting to experience Myanmar deeply and sincerely, I highly recommend visiting Pathein at least once.
