Pathein River fisherman casting long nets on the Pathein River, Irrawaddy region, Myanmar
One of the vivid memories in my mind, mr.hotsia, is the atmosphere along the Pathein River in the Irrawaddy region, Myanmar, where local fishermen still use traditional methods to patiently and diligently cast long fishing nets. This journey was not only about enjoying the beautiful views of the main river that sustains the local people but also about understanding the lifestyle of a community that remains simple and deeply connected to nature.
I traveled from Myitkyina, the source of the Irrawaddy River, located in Kachin State.Read the story of the origin of the Irrawaddy RiverThere, I rented a motorcycle and traveled through roadside villages until I reached Pathein, a city where the wide river and the lives of the locals are truly intertwined with the water. The Pathein River plays an important role similar to the main Irrawaddy River flowing through the heart of Myanmar. Although there is little clear information about which province Pathein belongs to, experiencing the atmosphere firsthand made me feel closer to the essence of this river.
Fishermen's way of life and long net fishing
At early dawn, I went out with local fishermen who call themselves “Pathein river fishermen.” They use small wooden boats to navigate the river shrouded in light mist. The peaceful silence covering the river was broken by the sound of the boat propellers and the soft conversations of the people on board.
"Long net fishing" is a native fishing technique characterized by nets stretched across the river to catch fish during low tide or when fish swim with the tide. The locals told me that this net requires great skill to position correctly and to predict the direction of the water and fish because if mistimed or misplaced, no fish will be caught to take home.
I tried helping them gather the nets and scoop up the caught fish. Various small and large fish species were continuously caught, some of which are local fish rarely seen in general markets. This is the joy of the locals who catch fish to sell or keep for their family’s consumption.
Riverside market and unhurried lifestyle
After going out on the boat and helping with the long net fishing, I traveled to the riverside market in Pathein city, a lively market with diverse cultures. The market here is not as large as typical tourist cities but is full of fresh products from the river and sea. Locals bring fresh fish, seafood, as well as local fruits and vegetables to sell from early morning.
I walked around the shops and talked with vendors, tasting grilled fish seasoned with local herbs and a spicy dipping sauce that blends sour, salty, and spicy flavors harmoniously. Some stalls also offered traditional sweets and seasonal fruits that are hard to find in big cities.
For those interested in food along the Irrawaddy River, I now recommend tryingthe Irrawaddy riverside market in Patheinwhich is one of the places that clearly shows the lifestyle and abundance of this river.
Experience connecting with the Irrawaddy River and traveling in Myanmar
The Pathein River is a branch of the great Irrawaddy River, which is Myanmar’s main artery, stretching over 2,000 kilometers from Kachin State.Myitsone headwaterspassing through many important cities before flowing into the Andaman Sea.
Being on a fishing boat at Pathein made me deeply understand the importance of this river to Myanmar’s communities, similar to what I experienced atIndawgyi Lakein Kachin State, which is a large freshwater lake and an important wildlife conservation area in Myanmar.
For those interested in traveling in Myanmar, I highly recommend going off the main tourist routes to experience the real lives of ordinary people, such as taking a long net fishing boat at Pathein or walking through riverside markets full of authentic local atmosphere to better understand this country.
Impressions and advice for travelers
I, mr.hotsia, want to say that being with the fishermen at Pathein is not just about taking beautiful photos or observing lifestyles but learning patience, the relationship between people and nature, and living simply, which is rare nowadays.
Traveling to the Pathein River area may not be as convenient as big cities, but if you have time and a love for adventure, I believe you will find peace, sincerity of the people, and unforgettable stories.
Before returning, don’t forget to prepare sun protection, hats, and drinking water, as well as study travel information and local culture to enjoy a happy and safe trip.
