Falling in Love with Thanaka Girls and Pathein Umbrellas in Pathein, Myanmar

When talking about the charm of Myanmar from mr.hotsia's perspective, one of the most unforgettable images is Burmese girls delicately applying “Thanaka” on their cheeks and the story of Pathein umbrellas in Pathein, a city located on the banks of the mighty Irrawaddy River. This city is not just a simple transit point but a cultural hub that deeply preserves the traditional community.

The first time I arrived in Pathein, it felt like stepping into a world where time stood still. The girls here apply Thanaka, a golden-yellow powder made from the bark of the Thanaka tree, used both as natural makeup and sunscreen. It’s not just about beauty but a symbol of a long-standing cultural heritage. The soft and smooth skin of Burmese girls tells a story of nature within. I also wanted to try applying Thanaka myself, but I must say it requires patience and knowing the right rhythm because it is a very delicate art.

Besides Thanaka, Pathein is also famous for “Pathein umbrellas,” handmade paper umbrellas where each piece reflects the precision and skill of local artisans. These brightly colored umbrellas are not just souvenirs but also reflect the lifestyle of the people here. I strolled through the Irrawaddy riverside market atIrrawaddy Riverside Market, Pathein City, MyanmarHere, rows of colorful Pathein umbrellas are displayed, and I saw craftsmen working diligently. This scene made me understand more about their love and pride in their craftsmanship.

Life Along the Irrawaddy River and the Border of Kachin State

Pathein is located on the banks of the Irrawaddy River, the main river that has nourished the lives of Myanmar’s people for a long time. This river originates from Nujiang in Yunnan Province and flows through Kachin State, which has equally fascinating stories. I have written aboutKachin Statethe source of the Irrawaddy River at Myitsone, where the Mali and N'Mai rivers converge. That area is full of pristine and peaceful nature, contrasting with the bustling atmosphere of Pathein that I experienced.

Taking a boat ride to observe life along the Irrawaddy River in Pathein was another experience that impressed me. People here live truly connected to the river. Small wooden boats sail continuously, transporting people and goods. The floating markets and riverside communities are full of colors and the aroma of local food, including the scent of rice noodles and rich curries sold along the way.

Authentic Burmese Food Experience in Pathein

Speaking of food in Pathein, I must say this is the place where you can taste authentic Burmese cuisine unlike anywhere else. In the riverside markets and small eateries I passed by, I tried “Mohinga,” the national breakfast fish soup of Myanmar, which here is rich with herbs and fresh fish. I also tried Burmese chili paste, which is spicy yet balanced, perfect with hot steamed rice.

For those interested in Burmese cuisine, I recommend checking outFood and Dining in Bagan, Myanmarwhich is another city I have traveled to and sampled a variety of local dishes. Walking and eating street food in Myanmar is a charm that mr.hotsia deeply appreciates because it truly reflects the culture and lifestyle of the locals.

Travel and Real-Life Experience in Myanmar

For traveling to Pathein, I recommend using boats or cars from Nyaung-U or Yangon because the routes are quite convenient and you get to experience unique roadside life. In Nyaung-U itself, I have written aboutHorse Carriage Ride in Bagan, Myanmarwhich is another experience that gave me a deeper understanding of Myanmar. Although horse carriages are not as common in Pathein as in Nyaung-U, walking or cycling around the city and markets is a great way to absorb the atmosphere.

As a traveler who has been to many parts of Myanmar, I, mr.hotsia, want to say that Pathein is a city where you can intimately experience authentic Myanmar, from its culture, the beauty of handicrafts, to the riverside lifestyle along the Irrawaddy River that harmoniously connects people and nature.
