Bengal Net Fishing, Abundant Fish at Kyaukpyu, Rakhine State, Myanmar
When it comes to unique travel experiences in Myanmar, Kyaukpyu in Rakhine State is a destination that mr.hotsia wants everyone to experience firsthand. Witnessing the lifestyle of fishermen along the Andaman Sea here is a charm you won’t find elsewhere. Bengal net fishing here is not just an activity but an ancient way of life that still remains for us to observe and learn from.
That day, mr.hotsia woke up early with the scent of the sea and the sound of waves crashing ashore. Kyaukpyu has a small pier where local fishermen diligently engage in net fishing. I walked along the beach with a light mist lingering before seeing small wooden boats drifting ashore with smiles from villagers holding fresh fishing nets. There were truly many fish, including sea bass, mackerel, and the popular talumpuk fish in this area.
One interesting aspect of this area is Bengal net fishing, a technique using large floating nets on the water surface. Fishermen work together to pull the nets up to gather fish, then select fresh fish to place in baskets for sale at Kyaukpyu’s fresh market or to be sent to other towns in Rakhine State, including Naypyidaw.
During mr.hotsia’s visit, the fish market atmosphere in Kyaukpyu was very lively. The fresh market by the pier was where I closely experienced the local way of life. The sounds of bargaining between vendors and fishermen in the early evening were common. Here, there’s not only fresh fish but also various processed seafood like salted fermented fish and salted snakehead fish, which mr.hotsia is familiar with and has written about in articles.Salted snakehead fish from the fresh market in Zaophyu, MyanmarI can say the taste is equally delicious.
Seaside Lifestyle with the Essence of Kyaukpyu
Kyaukpyu is not just a fishing port town but also rich in culture and traditional lifestyles. Most locals here are Rakhine people, who have distinct language, food, and customs different from central Myanmar. Traveling around this town with mr.hotsia felt like stepping back in time, where villagers still fish by hand with strong dedication.
Trying fresh seafood made from fish caught by Bengal net fishing is an experience mr.hotsia highly recommends. Seaside restaurants in Kyaukpyu offer grilled fish with bold flavors and traditional fish curry using local spices, as I have previously recommended inmr.hotsia@Kyaukpyu 15/20: Enjoying Rakhine Food in Zaophyu, Kyaukpyu Myanmarwith rich and intense flavors that make you want to ask for more hot rice.
Additionally, Kyaukpyu has a riverside market that is an important trade route for the local community. mr.hotsia recommends visiting early in the morning to see vendors selling fresh seafood like shrimp, crab, squid, as well as fresh local fruits and vegetables. For a full Burmese floating market experience, don’t forget to visitIrrawaddy Riverside Market in Pathein, Myanmarwhich is not far away.
Routes and Travel to Kyaukpyu
To get to Kyaukpyu, although there are no direct flights from major cities in Myanmar, traveling by bus or private car from main ports like Yangon or Naypyidaw is feasible. This road takes you through fields and small villages, offering a glimpse of authentic southwestern Myanmar life.
Previously, mr.hotsia wrote about traveling in Kachin State in northern Myanmar in the articleExploring the Origin of the Irrawaddy River, Mitgina, Kachin Statewhich shows the geographical and cultural diversity of this country. If you want to feel close to nature and genuine fishing communities, traveling to Kyaukpyu is another route mr.hotsia encourages you to try.
Atmosphere and Memories from the Andaman Sea
It’s not just the fish and net fishing that make mr.hotsia fall in love with Kyaukpyu, but also the peaceful beaches and the simplicity of the people here. Although it is in a country less developed than big cities, it always feels warm and friendly. Sitting to watch the sunset by the Andaman Sea with the sound of waves crashing ashore is a memory that makes me want to return again.
If you enjoy deep local travel and want to see real lifestyles, not just tourist spots, mr.hotsia recommends keeping Kyaukpyu on your list. This is a small corner of Myanmar that still firmly preserves its charm and traditions.
