Taste Burmese sweets by the Sittwe River in Sittwe city, Rakhine State

Arriving at Sittwe, a port city on the Andaman Sea coast of Rakhine State, also known locally as “Rakhine,” the first feeling I, mr.hotsia, experienced was the charm of coastal life blending diverse ethnic cultures including Rakhine, Muslim, and Chinese. This place is not just an ordinary tourist town but also a gateway to the world of traditional Burmese sweets that cannot be found elsewhere.

I strolled along the small streets by the Sittwe River. Here, fresh markets and roadside Burmese sweet shops are found on almost every corner. The best time to visit the market is late afternoon because most Burmese sweets are freshly made and sold hot. At this time, the fragrant aroma of flour, rice, and coconut milk blends and spreads everywhere.

Burmese Sweets in Sittwe... Flavors and Stories from the Streets

Most of the Burmese sweets I tried today come in many varieties, from fluffy cup cakes, crispy rice crackers, to sweet and savory crispy breads. The highlight of Burmese sweets here is the use of fresh ingredients and traditional methods passed down through generations.

For example, the fluffy cup cake, called “Mohinga” by locals in Sittwe, is a sweet dessert dipped in coconut milk mixed with beans and sesame seeds, deliciously sweet and creamy that you’ll want a second piece. The crispy rice crackers made from rice flour and fried green mung beans to a golden crisp, eaten with sweet dipping sauce or spicy chili sauce, perfectly embody authentic Burmese flavors.

What I liked most was the variety of sweets reflecting the culture of the Rakhine people themselves. The locals are unhurried; they take time to make sweets meticulously and sell them with friendly smiles. Although their English is limited, their dedication and warmth clearly communicate through the taste of these sweets.

Riverside Market and Lifestyle Atmosphere

A short walk from Sittwe, I stopped by a riverside market bustling with people of various ethnicities including Burmese, Muslim, and Chinese. Here, food is not just something to eat but an impressive cultural exchange.

This market is like the heart of the city, with fresh ingredients, spices, fish and meat stalls, and traditional sweets I have never seen elsewhere, including the Hilsa fish, a local fish important to the Bay of Bengal and connected to traditional dishes in many countries in the region.

Connecting with Nature and Culture in Kachin State

After tasting Burmese sweets in Sittwe, I had the opportunity to talk with locals who had traveled to Kachin State, located not far north of Sittwe. It is the source of the important Irrawaddy River in Myanmar.Kachin StateIt boasts beautiful nature and fascinating tribal lifestyles. Traveling to Myitkyina, the headwaters of the Irrawaddy River, is another experience I highly recommend.

The connection between food, sweets, and the lifestyles of people in each area reveals the depth of Burmese culture. Whether in a coastal city like Sittwe or the high mountains of Kachin State, the uniqueness and deliciousness of local sweets remain impressively preserved.

Tips for Travelers Who Love Burmese Sweets

If you are someone who enjoys traveling to follow local food like me, mr.hotsia, prepare yourself for the bustling yet warm market atmosphere in Sittwe. Don’t be afraid to try sweets that look simple but have extraordinary flavors. Also, don’t forget to talk with the shop owners; they often have interesting stories about recipes and preparation methods.

Additionally, traveling in Sittwe is not difficult, but you should bring sun protection, face masks, and drinking water because the coastal weather and some roads may be a bit dusty.
