Street Food in Myitkyina, Myanmar: Flavors You Must Try with mr.hotsia
Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State in northern Myanmar, is a destination I, mr.hotsia, am enchanted by due to its lifestyle and street food. If you enjoy adventurous travel and want to experience authentic Myanmar flavors unlike any other, Myitkyina is the answer you shouldn't miss.
Traveling here was not easy for me, but the challenges made every step more meaningful. Traveling from major cities to Myitkyina may involve dirt roads and challenging terrain, but the moment you step off the vehicle, the lively street markets and the aroma of food in the air completely erase your fatigue.
Myitkyina Street Food Market: Local Flavors You Must Try
The street markets in Myitkyina are my favorite morning stroll spots to experience local life. Here, you'll find a variety of food stalls, from hot sticky rice with spicy Myanmar chili paste to freshly made traditional desserts every day.
One of my favorite dishes here is "Mohinga," a rich river fish soup served with rice noodles or toasted bread. It's an incredibly energizing meal. I also enjoy ordering "Burmese Salad Rice," mixed with fresh vegetables and roasted peanuts, topped with a sweet, sour, and slightly spicy dressing—a flavor you won't find elsewhere.
Additionally, there are small stalls selling fried and grilled items like fragrant grilled chicken and marinated pork skewers with a perfect sweet and salty taste—eye-catching and highly recommended. For seafood lovers, the Irrawaddy River flowing from Kachin State provides fresh and delicious fish and shrimp. I tried the famous Hilsa fish, a renowned local fish, seasoned with native spices, making it an unforgettable special meal.
Life Along the Irrawaddy River and the Charm of Kachin State
Myitkyina is not only about street food but also a gateway to the nature and culture of Kachin State, which I have written about in an article.Exploring the Source of the Irrawaddy River: Myitkyina, Kachin State, MyanmarKachin State is famous for the beauty of the Irrawaddy River, formed by the confluence of the Mekha and Maliha rivers, flowing through many Red Tai and Kachin villages.
Walking through the market by the Irrawaddy River, I saw locals fishing by boat and selling goods. The atmosphere here is warm and simple, very different from the busy image of big cities in Myanmar, making you feel like stepping back in time to experience the traditional lifestyle of the Burmese people.
Travel Tips and Advice from mr.hotsia
For traveling in Myitkyina, I recommend renting a motorcycle from your accommodation at an affordable price of about 350 baht per day. Wearing a helmet is mandatory for safety and allows you to freely explore villages along the way, an experience I love because it offers new perspectives of the local area.
In the evening, the street markets become especially lively. Many food stalls light up dimly with enticing aromas everywhere. I usually stroll and sample food alongside locals enjoying their meals. Trying local Myanmar Beer with my favorite dishes is one of my most memorable moments in Myitkyina.
Experience Myitkyina More Deeply
If you are interested in nature and culture, I, mr.hotsia, recommend planning a trip to Indawgyi Lake, not far from Myitkyina. It is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and a protected wildlife sanctuary.
