Authentic hand-eating of Kachin women, original flavors from Kachin State, Myanmar

When it comes to a truly traditional eating experience of Myanmar, especially in Kachin State, which many may not know well, I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel and closely experience the local lifestyle and food there. I can say it is definitely different from the Myanmar food found in big cities or typical tourist restaurants.

Kachin State is located at the northernmost part of Myanmar, well known for its rich nature and as the origin of the country's main Irrawaddy River. A key spot is Myitsone, where the Mali Hka and N'Mai Hka rivers converge to form the Irrawaddy River. I once rode a motorcycle from my accommodation to explore this area leisurely for about an hour, passing small villages filled with Kachin ethnic people who still firmly preserve their traditional way of life.Read more about traveling in Kachin State

Authentic Hands and Kachin Food: A Taste You Must Experience Yourself

What fascinates me about Kachin food is the traditional bare-hand eating by Kachin women, which is not just a way of eating but also part of the culture and relationships within family and community. I remember sitting and eating with Kachin women by Indawgyi Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, which is an important natural food source for locals.Read about Indawgyi Lake

The dishes I tasted ranged from freshly caught fish from Indawgyi Lake. The fish here is fresh, sweet, and has a unique aroma, whether boiled, grilled, or homemade dried fish in the village. Served with hot sticky rice and fresh vegetables grown locally. There is also a Kachin-style chili paste that is spicy and flavorful, made from fresh chili and local herbs mixed with finely ground fish, creating a smooth taste completely different from chili pastes in other parts of Myanmar.

Kachin Lifestyle and Eating at Indawgyi

Eating with bare hands like Kachin women is not just about convenience but a sign of respect and closeness among those sharing the meal. It’s like bonding within family or community. I once watched their eating style at a local feast in a village by Indawgyi Lake. The Kachin women sat in a row with many dishes placed in the center. Everyone used their right hand to pick food, then took small sticky rice balls to dip into spicy chili paste or sauce. Vegetables and meat were shared equally and warmly.

I felt warmth and unity in every bite, making this eating experience not just about taste but about the feeling of being part of a culture that truly preserves its values.

Travel and Tips for Travelers

If you want to deeply experience authentic hand-eating like I did, mr.hotsia, I recommend planning a trip to Kachin State, especially around Indawgyi Lake. Travel here may not be as comfortable as in big cities, but this challenge will give you a unique and rewarding experience.

Don’t forget to rent a motorcycle from your accommodation for flexibility traveling between villages, and prepare to wear a helmet because roads here are mostly dirt and rocky. Also, be ready to open your mind to different cultures and lifestyles. I believe you will learn and understand Myanmar’s diversity more from this journey.
