Horse Carriage Ride Exploring Loi Ko, Kayah State, Myanmar: A firsthand experience from mr.hotsia

For those who have followed my work, you know that mr.hotsia doesn’t prefer casual tourism but enjoys immersive local experiences. The latest trip to Kayah State, a place many might not be familiar with, was fascinating for me. Especially the horse carriage ride exploring Loi Ko village, which is the gateway to the authentic rural lifestyle of Myanmar.

Loi Ko is located in Kayah State, a small state hidden within Myanmar, not far from Kachin State where I previously traveled to the source of the Irrawaddy River.Kachin StateThis context is important to better understand the nature and culture of the surrounding areas. Kayah State features complex mountainous terrain and valleys, with many hill tribe and indigenous villages. Loi Ko is one of the villages I chose to explore by horse carriage.

Starting the journey by horse carriage

Upon arriving at Loi Ko, the first thing I noticed was the peacefulness and simplicity of daily life. Most locals still live traditionally, and horse carriages are the main mode of transport, allowing us to fully absorb the atmosphere. The horse carriages here are different from those I rode in Bagan or Pagan.Riding a horse carriage in BaganBecause the distance and mountainous routes require more careful riding, the surroundings gave me the chance to talk with the carriage driver. Although English was limited, gestures and smiles made communication warm and friendly.

Our route passed through lush green rice fields and small wooden houses on hills. At some points, there were views overlooking small villages below and distant surrounding mountains. It felt like stepping back to a time before technology played a big role. I didn’t hesitate to take out my camera to capture this atmosphere as a memory.

Lifestyle and culture of the Loi Ko people

One thing that impressed me was the lifestyle that strongly preserves the identity of the indigenous tribes. Most Loi Ko residents are Kayah people. There is a small market where locals sell local products such as fresh vegetables, fruits from their gardens, and handmade crafts. I tried local dishes with unique flavors, clearly different from Burmese food in big cities like Yangon or Mandalay.

The food here often uses local herbs and fresh ingredients, such as herbal curry, grilled fish, and traditionally cooked sticky rice. The locals told me they highly respect nature and balance in their way of life, which I felt through conversations and sharing meals at the small market.

Connections with nearby areas in Kachin State and Indawgyi Lake

After spending time exploring Loi Ko, I reflected on my previous trip to Indawgyi Lake.IndawgyiLocated in Kachin State, since Kayah and Kachin States are in the same region, some cultural and natural aspects are similar. This area is rich in pristine nature and remarkable biodiversity. Indawgyi Lake is an important wildlife sanctuary in Myanmar and home to many bird species. Loi Ko also boasts impressive natural abundance.

For those interested in nature and cultural routes, I recommend continuing to Kachin State to experience a different yet connected journey.

Travel tips and precautions

Traveling in Kayah State and Loi Ko has many limitations in transportation and facilities. Horse carriages are the best option for exploring villages and mountain paths. However, prepare for health and dust protection as most roads are dirt and dusty, similar to the roads in Nyaung U I described in my article.Riding a horse carriage in BaganAlso, bring clothing and shoes suitable for the climate and road conditions.

Another recommendation is to spend time openly talking with locals. They are happy to share stories about their lives and culture in a friendly manner, an experience you won’t get from rushed tourism.

Conclusion: A fulfilling journey

For me, mr.hotsia, the horse carriage ride exploring Loi Ko in Kayah State is more than tourism. It’s an opportunity to experience the reality of rural life in Myanmar, to learn and truly understand the locals’ way of living. The peace, simplicity, and naturalness here made me feel fulfilled and eager to share with those who appreciate deep travel experiences.
