Discover Phang Mameeya, Mon State, Myanmar
When talking about traveling in Myanmar, few people know about “Phang Mameeya,” a small hidden spot in Mon State, which is less mentioned compared to Kachin State or Bagan. But for me, mr.hotsia, this trip to Phang Mameeya was a truly eye-opening experience of Myanmar tourism.
Phang Mameeya is located in the rural area of Mon State. I must say the journey is neither easy nor as convenient as in big cities. But if you are an adventurous traveler like me, this trip will feel like discovering a hidden treasure beneath Myanmar’s land.
How to travel and the atmosphere around Phang Mameeya
I started my journey from the heart of Yangon, choosing to take a local bus which allowed me to experience the real lifestyle of Burmese people. The route passed through mountains and vast fields, showing me beautiful natural scenes rarely seen by many, especially when the bus passed small villages where people still live traditionally.
As I approached Phang Mameeya, I saw the simple and friendly lifestyle of the villagers. They greeted me warmly with smiles. Although English communication was limited, their sincerity was felt through their helpfulness and sharing of local stories.
Phang Mameeya’s cultural and natural beauty
The uniqueness of Phang Mameeya is not only in its natural scenery but also in its ancient temples and local art that reflect the history and religion of Mon State, clearly different from other states in Myanmar. I walked around the temples and found murals with delicate patterns telling fascinating stories of the past.
There is also a small local market where I tasted local dishes hard to find in big cities, such as Mon-style chicken biryani and sweets made from natural ingredients around the area, with flavors unlike anywhere else.
Connecting experiences with other states in Myanmar
During this trip, I recalled my experience in Kachin State in northern Myanmar, where I visited the origin of the Irrawaddy River at Myitsone, the place where the Mali and N’mai rivers merge to form the main Irrawaddy River.Read about the Kachin State and Irrawaddy River journeyKachin State also has Indawgyi Lake, considered the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, full of wildlife and diverse ethnic groups.Click to read about Indawgyi LakeI feel that each state in Myanmar has its own unique charm worth exploring and learning endlessly.
Food and lifestyle at Phang Mameeya
I must say that visiting Phang Mameeya is not only about enjoying beautiful views but also tasting unique local food. I tried Mon-style sticky rice with coconut milk, very fragrant and sweet, and curry with a mild flavor unlike the spicier ones in big cities. The local market here offers fresh produce and fruits grown by the community, making every bite taste fresh.
The villagers’ lifestyle is simple but happy. I saw children playing in the river and elders chatting under big trees, scenes that reminded me of peace and naturalness rarely found nowadays.
