Nong Nene Ae, Red Tai Girl from Myanmar: The Charm of Life by Indawgyi Lake

I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel deep into Kachin State, Myanmar, to experience the real life of the Red Tai woman known as “Nong Nene Ae,” who is part of the Red Tai (Shan) ethnic group living around Indawgyi Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia.

Before telling you about Nong Nene Ae, let me briefly introduce the overall context of this area. Indawgyi is located in the Mohnyin administrative district of Kachin State, where I previously documented the journey of the Irrawaddy River's origin inKachin Stateas well. This place is not only the source of the Irrawaddy River but also rich in abundant nature and indigenous tribal lifestyles that remain remarkably traditional.

Indawgyi Lake is approximately 24 kilometers long and about 13 kilometers wide. Around the lake are more than 20 villages where Red Tai and Kachin people live together. Most still practice traditional agriculture and have a deep connection to this lake.

Nong Nene Ae: The Beauty of Red Tai Life

I first met Nong Nene Ae in a small village by Indawgyi Lake. This Red Tai woman has a face that reflects both strength and gentleness at the same time. She wears a traditional handwoven outfit with bright patterns that reflect the deep culture of the Red Tai people.

Every day, Nong Nene Ae helps her family with corn farming, vegetable planting, and gathering wild vegetables along the lakeshore, which is an important food source for the community. I had the chance to sit and talk with her about life here and learn about the Red Tai tribe's stories passed down through generations.

She told me, “The water from the lake and surrounding forest is a very important resource for us, including fish, wild vegetables, and local herbs used for healing.” Her words made me feel the profound connection between nature and humans here.

Journey to the Red Tai Villages by Indawgyi Lake

If you want to experience this lifestyle like I did, I recommend starting in Mohnyin town and renting a boat from a guesthouse to visit various villages along the lake. Early morning boat trips reveal light mist over the water and many bird species flying by—a rare sight these days.

Besides enjoying the natural scenery, having unhurried conversations with locals and Nong Nene Ae helped me truly understand the meaning of “simple happiness.”

Red Tai Lifestyle and Culture

The Red Tai have a distinctive culture, especially in their traditional dress and long-standing customs. Nong Nene Ae and many Red Tai women still preserve their traditional attire completely, including original patterned skirts and handmade accessories. There are also folk songs and dances that tell stories of life and nature around them.

I had the chance to join a small community festival held to thank the sacred spirits and nature. The event was filled with folk music and smiles from people sharing their beautiful way of life with me.

Local Foods Not to Miss

Speaking of food in the Red Tai community by Indawgyi Lake, Nong Nene Ae recommended local dishes like sticky rice and fish curry made with fresh fish from Indawgyi Lake. The flavor is a perfect blend of Burmese spicy taste and Red Tai style.

There are also wild vegetables gathered around the lake and chili paste made from fresh local chili and herbs. I tried it with hot sticky rice—such a rare taste and an unforgettable experience for me.

The Importance of Indawgyi Lake and Conservation

Indawgyi Lake is not just a food and water source but also a wildlife sanctuary with very high biodiversity. It is home to many mammals and rare bird species. This area is one of Myanmar’s important sites that require close protection.

For this reason, the Myanmar government declared it a wildlife sanctuary in 1999, which I previously wrote about in an articleIndawgyiIf you love birdwatching or nature that remains abundant, I recommend visiting here at least once in your lifetime.

Summary of Experience with Nong Nene Ae and the Red Tai

Spending time with Nong Nene Ae and the Red Tai people by Indawgyi Lake made me, mr.hotsia, feel the vitality and beauty in the simplicity of these people. Their lifestyle, deeply connected to nature and traditional culture, still exists despite the many changes in the world.

For travelers wanting to experience the genuine spirit of the Red Tai, visiting Kachin State and stopping by Indawgyi Lake is a must. Believe me, “Nong Nene Ae” will be one face in your memories that makes you fall in love with Myanmar from a never-before-seen perspective.
