Strange Fish in Inndawgyi Lake, Myanmar: A Story from mr.hotsia

When talking about Inndawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Myanmar, I, mr.hotsia, must say that this is not only the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia but also a natural habitat full of wonders with diverse aquatic animals and fish species, especially the strange fish I had the chance to see with my own eyes during my exploration in Mohnyin area of Kachin State.

Inndawgyi Lake is about 13 kilometers wide and 24 kilometers long. Around the lake are Shan villages, also known as Tai Daeng, along with Kachin people living together harmoniously. Most locals live by agriculture and traditional fishing, a lifestyle that I felt was simple and warm when I talked with them.

Journey to Inndawgyi Lake: A Route Full of Stories

Traveling from Myitkyina city, a historically important city on Myanmar's main Irrawaddy River (read more atKachin State), heading to Inndawgyi Lake takes about 3-4 hours. I chose to rent a motorcycle for flexibility and to fully experience the roadside atmosphere. Riding a motorcycle in Kachin requires caution due to dust and rough road conditions, but for me, it was the best chance to see roadside community life and the raw nature of Myanmar.

Unusual Fish in Inndawgyi Lake: An Unforgettable Experience

What makes Inndawgyi Lake different from other lakes, besides its natural richness, is encountering fish never seen anywhere else. I remember paddling a boat with local villagers who pointed out strange fish with unique features, vivid patterns, and some with unusual shapes that seemed unlike typical freshwater fish. These fish not only caught my attention but also reflected the biodiversity that Inndawgyi Lake preserves well.

Locals said some fish species are important to the lake's ecosystem, and some are in demand in local markets, giving me a chance to taste local dishes made from these fish, whether grilled or in curry. I could sense the fresh flavors and authentic natural aroma that can't be found elsewhere.

Lifestyle and Culture Around Inndawgyi Lake

Besides the fish, experiencing the lifestyle of Shan and Kachin people living around the lake was invaluable. I visited several small villages and found that people still preserve traditional ways, such as using wooden paddle boats, sustainable fishing, and seasonal vegetable gardening. I also saw local markets offering fresh products from the lake and mountains, including strange fish, local vegetables, and spices used in traditional cooking.

In some villages, I had the opportunity to share meals with warm Shan families and exchange stories about life here. This is the charm of traveling with mr.hotsia, who loves to dive deep and experience the true essence of each place.

Why Should You Visit Inndawgyi Lake?

If you love nature, aquatic animals, or photography, the strange fish at Inndawgyi Lake will surely inspire you. Importantly, this area has been a wildlife sanctuary since 1999, covering over 780 square kilometers. It is a vital biodiversity hotspot in Myanmar and home to many rare bird species that birdwatchers like me never miss (read more about Inndawgyi Lake atInndawgyi)

). For the trip, I recommend preparing food and drinking water as this area remains very natural. Travel might not be as comfortable as in big cities, but the tranquility and natural beauty will make you forget those hardships.

Destinations Connecting Myanmar Experiences

After experiencing Inndawgyi Lake and its strange fish, I also visited nearby places in Kachin State, such as the source of the Irrawaddy River at Myitsone, which I have shared in another articleKachin State, and not far away, there are interesting local markets where I truly tasted authentic local food.

If you want to deeply experience the rawness of Myanmar, whether it is local lifestyles, unusual fish, or untouched nature, Inndawgyi Lake is a destination that mr.hotsia highly recommends you not to miss.
