White Elephant Found in the Forest of the Red Tai Women of Indawgyi, Myanmar

In the peaceful and mysterious northern Myanmar, I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel around Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State to discover the wonder of the legendary white elephant. Many may think it is just a tale, but for me, it was a real experience that must be shared.

Indawgyi Lake is located in Mohnyin District of Kachin State. It is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, measuring 13 kilometers wide and over 24 kilometers long. The lake is surrounded by Red Tai and Kachin villages that still maintain their traditional way of life. I chose to stay in a lakeside village to connect with locals and study their deep bond with nature.

Traveling to Indawgyi is not as easy as it seems; one must drive through dirt roads and winding paths. But upon arriving at the vast forest and lake, I felt as if I had entered another world. This is a wildlife sanctuary with high biodiversity, including many bird species and rare mammals. The white elephant is one of the creatures locals say often appears in the large forest nearby.

I joined the locals in tracking the white elephant's traces in the damp forest by the lake, using foot travel and small bamboo rafts in the early morning. Thick fog covered the lake and bird calls accompanied us. I remember that the wait was worth it because finally, I saw a large, graceful white-gray elephant slowly walking along the forest path by the water. It was unlike any elephant I had seen in zoos or tourist spots. Seeing the white elephant in its natural habitat made me reflect on the true relationship between humans and nature.

Returning to the context of Kachin State, the origin of the important Irrawaddy River.Kachin StateIt is a fertile land with rich cultural diversity of the Red Tai and Kachin people who live in harmony with nature. Indawgyi Lake is not just a large water body but also the center of the ecosystem and the way of life of the local people, which I deeply experienced.

Besides seeing the white elephant, the impression I gained from this trip was tasting local food made by villagers by the lake, mostly from fresh ingredients from the forest and water, such as freshwater fish caught from the lake, sweet and rich Irrawaddy River fish, and homegrown local vegetables. Eating such authentic flavors made me feel the simplicity and warmth of the Myanmar people here.

I also talked with locals about their lifestyle and relationship with wildlife like the white elephant. They believe the white elephant is a sacred animal that protects the forest and lake from destruction. This belief reflects the deep respect for nature ingrained in the hearts of the Red Tai and Kachin people here.

For travelers interested in experiencing what I did, I recommend visiting Indawgyi Lake during the cool winter season when many bird species appear. Renting a boat from local guesthouses to go birdwatching or tracking animals in the forest is the best way. Don’t forget to bring binoculars and a camera to capture memories that cannot be found elsewhere.

If anyone is interested in a deeper story about Indawgyi Lake, mr.hotsia recommends reading more atIndawgyi Articlewhere I have fully detailed the lake and the lifestyle of the local people.

Finally, the journey to find the white elephant in the forest of the Red Tai women of Indawgyi was not just an adventure with nature but also a learning experience to understand the true way of life of ethnic groups in Myanmar. For mr.hotsia, this is the charm that makes travel not just about visiting new places but truly touching the heart of the land traveled.
