Myanmar: The Land of the Irrawaddy River and Fascinating Lifestyles

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia, and today I will take everyone to experience the real atmosphere of Myanmar from my own travels. Many people may know Myanmar through images of beautiful golden pagodas or the city of Bagan filled with countless pagodas. But for mr.hotsia, Myanmar has much more waiting to be discovered — nature, lifestyles, and local food that I have personally tasted.

The Origin of the Irrawaddy River in Kachin State

For those who love nature and great rivers, northern Myanmar, especiallyKachin Stateis a destination highly recommended by mr.hotsia. The Irrawaddy River, Myanmar's main river stretching over 2,170 kilometers, originates from the Mali Hka and Mekha rivers at Myitkyina, also known as Myitsone, about 40 kilometers from the city center.

I chose to rent a motorcycle from my hotel in Myitkyina at an affordable price of about 350 baht per day. Riding a motorcycle here requires wearing a helmet at all times for safety, and many roads are still dirt tracks. It took me about an hour to reach the confluence of these two rivers, where the roadside atmosphere is filled with Kachin villages and complex mountain views — a beautiful and peaceful scene.

Walking along the Irrawaddy River in the early morning, I saw locals fishing and washing clothes simply. This lifestyle charm made me feel like I traveled back in time and truly understand the deep bond between the Burmese people and this river.

Indawgyi Lake: A Paradise for Rare Birds in Kachin State

Not far from Kachin State, there is another place mr.hotsia wants to recommend:Indawgyi LakeThe largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, about 13 kilometers wide and 24 kilometers long. Around the lake, many Shan (Red Tai) and Kachin villages are located.

I rented a boat from a guesthouse in a small village to explore nature and many rare bird species here. Especially in January, Greylag geese and various migratory birds fill the sky — a beautiful and exciting sight for bird watchers and nature lovers like me.

This lake was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1999, covering over 780 square kilometers. It is rich in rare wildlife and plants. This is another side of Myanmar that most people may not know, but mr.hotsia confirms it is truly worth visiting.

Bagan: The City of Pagodas and Local Flavors Not to Miss

When talking about Myanmar, one cannot skip Bagan or Pagan, a tourist city with thousands of pagodas. I have been there and shared my experience inFood in Bagan, PaganandHorse Carriage Ride in Bagan, PaganHere, I tried a variety of local foods, from Indian roti sold at the morning market in front of the market to the famous local restaurant “Shwe Yar Su,” which serves Myanmar Beer with rich chicken curry eaten with hot steamed rice — so delicious I had to recommend it.

Exploring the city by horse carriage was a new experience. The horse carriages in Bagan take you around Nyaung-U, the town where I stayed. Although the roads are dusty and the drivers speak little English, riding the horse carriage allowed me to absorb the community atmosphere and daily life closely.

However, for those who want to see the sunrise or sunset over the sea of pagodas in Bagan, I recommend renting a taxi instead, as horse carriage prices are quite high and the views may not be as beautiful as expected.

Lifestyles and Riverside Markets: The True Colors of Myanmar

Besides the tourist spots I mentioned, the Irrawaddy riverside market in Pathein is another place that impressed me greatly. It is full of fresh produce, local food, and handmade crafts. I strolled and chatted with vendors here and tried Hilsa fish, a famous fish in this region considered a cultural treasure of both Myanmar and Bangladesh.

This riverside market is perfect for those who want to see the authentic Burmese lifestyle without embellishment and capture warm, lively local scenes in photos.

How to Prepare for a Fun and Safe Trip to Myanmar

mr.hotsia summarizes recommendations for those planning to visit Myanmar: bring a face mask or nasal cover because many areas like Nyaung-U still have a lot of dust. Also, renting a motorcycle or taxi for convenient travel within towns and between villages will help you experience the real atmosphere of Myanmar more fully.

Most importantly, don’t forget to try the diverse local foods. The flavors here will leave you impressed and unforgettable, just as mr.hotsia experienced.
