Mission to Find Descendants of Thai People in Myanmar: A journey full of stories and cultural essence

I, mr.hotsia, once had the opportunity to travel to a land that many may not know well — the land in Myanmar where descendants of Thai people live. Many may wonder why I chose this route? Because it is a mission to trace roots and experience the lifestyle of people who still preserve their Thai identity, even though they live abroad in a country called “Myanmar.”

This journey did not have a clear destination like a famous province or city, but I chose to explore areas connected to Thai ethnic groups in Myanmar. Many groups still use various local Thai dialects and have lifestyles similar to ours. My travels often included visits to nearby places of natural and cultural significance, such as in Kachin State, which I have written about in an article.Exploring the Origin of the Irrawaddy River, Myitkyina, Kachin State, MyanmarWhere the main Irrawaddy River of Myanmar begins from the Mali Hka and Mekha rivers that converge at Myitkyina city.

Traveling in these areas is not easy. One must prepare both physically and mentally to encounter cultural differences, as well as rural life that still retains the rawness of nature and daily living. I, mr.hotsia, chose to rent a motorcycle to ride along rural routes to fully experience the atmosphere and talk closely with locals. Wearing a helmet was necessary on this trip due to road conditions and unfavorable weather.

Meeting Descendants of Thai People in Myanmar and Interesting Communities

One of the places I had the chance to visit was Indawgyi Lake, located in Kachin State. This freshwater lake, the largest in Southeast Asia, is surrounded by Shan and Red Thai villages that still preserve the Thai language and culture. The tranquility and rich nature made me feel like I was transported back to rural Thailand in the past.Read more about Indawgyi

During my stay there, I had the opportunity to talk with villagers who shared the history of their community, their connection to Thai culture, and how they preserve their local language. Although living in Myanmar, the Thai identity remains vibrant in daily life, including food, traditions, and the language used within families.

Flavors of Food and Fresh Markets Reflecting Local Life

One charm I, mr.hotsia, never miss when visiting anywhere is trying local food and stopping by fresh markets. In Myanmar, I walked through local markets full of colors and the aroma of spices, featuring food that blends Burmese, Thai, and Chinese flavors harmoniously.

The dishes I tasted were sometimes simple but packed with bold flavors and the fragrance of herbs and local seasonings, such as chicken curry rich with spices and fresh coconut milk, or Indian-style roti served with fragrant tea. These foods reflect the diverse culture of people living in the same area perfectly. Travel and Ways to Explore the Area Independently

Traveling in Myanmar for me, mr.hotsia, is an adventure that requires patience and an open heart because not every place has complete facilities. I recommend renting a motorcycle or using horse-drawn carriage services in some towns to access communities and beautiful viewpoints, such as in Nyaung-U, where I tried riding a horse carriage along dusty roads to see the market atmosphere and local lifestyle.Horse Carriage Ride in Bagan, MyanmarAn experience I think travelers wanting to feel Burmese life should try

Another challenge is communicating with locals, who mostly speak Burmese or various local languages. I often use body language and smiles as a medium. Sometimes I learn local Thai dialect words they still preserve. Talking and exchanging experiences with villagers made me feel like I was back home again, even abroad.

Conclusion and Inspiration from the Mission to Find Descendants of Thai People

The mission to find descendants of Thai people in Myanmar is not just a travel journey but a search for cultural connections and the way of life of Thai people far from home. I, mr.hotsia, gained invaluable experiences that cannot be found elsewhere — the warmth of the people, the unique flavors of food, and the beauty of nature that remains intact.

If you love traveling and want to go off the beaten path, try opening your heart and experiencing Thai identity in Myanmar once. You will realize that even far away, the hearts of Thai people still beat strongly in every part of this land.
