Dining Circle with Red Shan Women in the mysterious land of Kachin State

When mr.hotsia had the opportunity to travel deep into Kachin State, Myanmar, a strong feeling of excitement and desire to understand the authentic local lifestyle surged. The “Red Shan” ethnic group, residing around Indawgyi Lake, became my eagerly anticipated destination.

Kachin State itself is an area full of steep mountains and lush forests. The main Irrawaddy River of Myanmar begins here, passing through Myitkyina and the confluence point called Myitsone, where the Mali and Mekha rivers meet.Read about the origin of the Irrawaddy RiverThat I previously wrote will help provide a clearer picture of the geography and importance of this area.

Dining Circle with Red Shan Women – Warmth Beyond Words

The first atmosphere I experienced with the Red Shan women was sitting around a small wooden house by Indawgyi Lake, sharing a meal. The soft glow from old lanterns illuminated their smiling faces and laughter. Tasting homemade local dishes such as hot sticky rice dipped in the community’s special chili paste and fresh vegetables grown in their backyard made me feel like I had traveled back in time to experience genuine traditional culture.

The Red Shan women live a simple life. Although far from modern development, the warmth they showed to guests like me was full of sincerity. I remember a moment when we talked about the history of this ethnic group and their relationship with the surrounding nature, all told with pride and depth.

Indawgyi Lake – The Freshwater Emerald of Southeast Asia

The Indawgyi Lake I visited is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia. Around the lake, nearly 20 villages of Red Shan and Shan people are scattered. The peaceful atmosphere and rich nature have earned it designation as a wildlife sanctuary.Read more about Indawgyi LakeThat I have previously shared

While boating on the lake, I saw rare birds and many amazing animals, and learned about the traditional fishing methods of the locals, deeply connected to their culture and beliefs.

Travel Methods and Unique Experiences

Traveling in Kachin State is not easy. mr.hotsia recommends renting a motorcycle from your accommodation for flexibility, costing about 350 baht per day. Riding motorcycles in areas like Myitkyina and around Indawgyi Lake requires wearing helmets and caution on dirt roads. Sometimes you need to stop at roadside villages to recharge and truly experience local life.

I had the chance to talk with locals and Red Shan women in various villages, each proudly sharing their life stories. Although this area is not yet well-known among tourists, I believe the pure nature and culture here will leave a lasting impression on many visitors.

Local Dishes Not to Miss

Speaking of food, I must highlight sticky rice with the ancient chili paste recipe of the Red Shan women as the best dish. There are also river fish dishes freshly caught from the lake, with rich flavors blended with local spices rarely found in big cities. If you enjoy spicy food and the aroma of herbs, these dishes are a must-try.

Additionally, Kachin State offers many other local foods I tried, such as traditional desserts and fresh natural fruit juices, which complete the travel experience perfectly.
