Burmese Girl Making Chili Paste: Life by Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State
When I think of the most memorable images from my recent trip to Myanmar, the unforgettable impression is the image of a fresh-faced Burmese girl sitting and making chili paste in a small village by Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State, Myanmar. It is a simple scene, yet full of charm and stories of a community that firmly preserves its traditional way of life.
Reaching this place was not easy because Indawgyi Lake is located in a remote area of Kachin State, a province with great ethnic diversity. However, this made my visit even more valuable as I got to see the true lifestyle of the Burmese people, especially the Red Tai and Shan ethnic groups living around this lake.
Indawgyi Lake: The Largest Freshwater Lake in Southeast Asia
Indawgyi Lake spans 13 kilometers from east to west and over 24 kilometers from north to south. Around the lake, there are more than 20 villages where locals still practice simple farming and traditional fishing. The surrounding atmosphere is peaceful and filled with the beauty of abundant nature. This is where I saw a Burmese girl carefully pounding chili paste amidst the fragrant aroma of fresh herbs and finely ground dried chilies.
This image reminded me of stories I had read inKachin Statewhere the main Irrawaddy River originates from the headwaters in this area. The richness of the water and nature is clearly reflected in the way of life of the people here.
Pounding Rice, Chili Paste, and Community Stories
The chili paste pounding I witnessed was not just a cooking activity but a ritual connecting the community's way of life. The chili paste here is usually made from fresh chilies, dried chilies, local herbs, and fermented fish or fresh fish from Indawgyi Lake. The flavor is spicy and rich with a unique character.
I chatted with the Burmese girl for a while. She said pounding chili paste is a daily routine that brings warmth to the family and is a staple food eaten with hot steamed rice every day. I tasted the chili paste she made; it was spicy but not overly sharp, with the fragrant aroma of herbs and fresh fermented fish that made me want to have several more bowls of rice.
Life by Indawgyi Lake
Besides cooking, I also walked around Indawgyi Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the region. Most locals engage in fishing and small-scale farming such as growing corn, beans, and local vegetables, which keeps the soil and water remarkably fertile.
Along the way, I encountered a small market by the lake where villagers exchanged fresh produce from the water and gardens. This market is the heart of communication and news exchange in the community. I recommend visiting and experiencing the atmosphere ofIndawgyiyourself. I guarantee you will see a side of Myanmar like never before.
Travel and Relaxation in Kachin State
For a traveler like me, mr.hotsia, traveling to Indawgyi Lake is not easy. You need to prepare for the journey and language barriers because this area is not yet popular with tourists. I rented a motorcycle from the main city of Kachin State and it took about an hour to reach the lake. I recommend wearing a helmet and bringing a face mask because some roads are still dusty.
Accommodation here mainly consists of homestays and small guesthouses run by locals, allowing me to truly experience the local lifestyle and have opportunities to exchange culture with the hosts.
