A Red Shan woman from Indawgyi, Myanmar, with the lifestyle of washing vegetables by the lake
This journey of mine, mr.hotsia, takes you to one of the peaceful corners full of the traditional lifestyle of the Red Shan people in Myanmar at Indawgyi Lake, which is located inKachin StateBy this largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, measuring over 13 kilometers wide and 24 kilometers long, it is not only an important water source but also home to the Red Shan and Shan people who live closely with nature.
One of the most memorable images from my trip was seeing a Red Shan woman in a village by Indawgyi Lake washing fresh vegetables from her garden, combined with the peaceful lakeside atmosphere. She wore a brightly colored traditional skirt naturally, which is characteristic of the Red Shan ethnic group, also called “Shan” in Myanmar and Kachin State. Washing vegetables here is not just a daily routine but a moment to connect with nature and a slow-paced way of life.
Most of the vegetables washed are locally grown, such as various wild vegetables and home garden vegetables cultivated by the villagers for family consumption. I recall the scent of earth and the moisture of the lake water enhancing this experience. Witnessing this simple yet joyful lifestyle made me realize that traveling is not just about seeing beautiful places but about experiencing the lives of the people there, which I want to share.
Indawgyi Lake is not just an ordinary water source but also an important wildlife sanctuary in Myanmar. The government aims to protect biodiversity, including mammals and many rare birds. In January, you can see species like the Oriental Darter, Greylag Geese, and the rare purple Swamphen. Additionally, local villagers around the lake continue to preserve their traditional ways, including fishing, gathering wild vegetables, and living harmoniously with nature.
In the morning, I took a walk in a small village by the lake and noticed many Red Shan women carefully preparing vegetables and ingredients for breakfast. Most villagers still practice traditional agriculture, growing pesticide-free vegetables and harvesting seasonally. I spoke with one young woman who said she feels proud to preserve the traditional lifestyle and culture of the Red Shan people amid the advancing modern world.
For those interested in experiencing this atmosphere, I recommend taking a boat tour around Indawgyi Lake to enjoy the nature and surrounding communities. Boats can be easily rented from local guesthouses. Alternatively, you can travel by motorcycle like I did to stop by lakeside villages along the way.Kachin StateWith beautiful natural attractions like Myitsone, the source of the Irrawaddy River, located not far away.
Since Indawgyi is located within Kachin State, it still maintains its traditional and peaceful atmosphere very well. I, mr.hotsia, recommend this place to anyone who loves nature and authentic local lifestyles. Here, you can not only see the vast and beautiful lake but also witness Red Shan women washing vegetables calmly and naturally like nowhere else in the world.
If you are interested in more stories about Red Shan culture or want to learn about the local food of the Red Shan people by Indawgyi Lake, you can readRed Shan Food at Indawgyi Lake, Kachin Statewhich I have written before. Most tourism in Myanmar is known for big cities or famous attractions like Bagan and Pagan. But for those who deeply appreciate culture and nature like me, mr.hotsia, visiting Indawgyi and sharing life with Red Shan women by the lake is a rare and valuable experience. The scent of nature, the politeness of locals, and the beauty of culture preserved firmly make it unforgettable.
