Experience the way of life of Burmese girls peeling coconuts and grilling salted fish by Indawgyi Lake

Traveling to Myanmar and experiencing the real life of local villagers is a joy I, mr.hotsia, always seek. This time I had the opportunity to visit Kachin State, located in northern Myanmar near the source of the Irrawaddy River and not far from Indawgyi Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia. Besides its beautiful nature, this place also has small corners full of interesting lifestyles such as coconut peeling and grilling salted fish by Burmese girls, which I want to share in this article.

From Kachin State to Indawgyi Lake: Journey to the Lakeside Community

I started from the town of Myitkyina inKachin Statewhere the Mali Hka and Mekha rivers converge to form the main Irrawaddy River of Myanmar. The journey to Indawgyi Lake takes about an hour by car. Although the road is not very convenient, the scenery along the way is filled with small villages and lush green rice fields that tell the agricultural lifestyle of the Shan and Kachin people here.

Indawgyi Lake, located in Mohnyin district of Kachin State, is about 13 kilometers wide and over 24 kilometers long. Around the lake are more than 20 villages. This area is a wildlife sanctuary and habitat for many rare bird species. I, mr.hotsia, saw many ethnic groups including Red Tai, Shan, and Kachin people who still firmly preserve their local culture.

Entering the Lakeside Kitchen: Burmese Girls Peeling Coconuts and Grilling Salted Fish

In a small village by Indawgyi Lake, I had the chance to sit and talk with a group of Burmese girls who still use traditional methods to prepare food, especially peeling fresh coconuts and grilling fragrant salted fish that was irresistible.

The Burmese girls here skillfully peel the coconut shells with sharp knives, then squeeze the coconut meat to drink fresh juice or use it in local dishes. The fish they grill is a type of salted fish caught from the lake or nearby rivers. The aroma of grilled fish fills the area, mixed with the scent of smoke and fresh coconut, creating a warm and homely atmosphere.

I, mr.hotsia, tried sitting at their table, enjoying simple local food full of flavor and meaning of their way of life. The feeling of becoming part of this small community was deeply impressive.

Lake Seafood and Diverse Local Culture

The food I tasted in the village by Indawgyi Lake was not only grilled salted fish and coconut but also local dishes like fish curry and fresh vegetables from backyard gardens grown organically. The villagers said these foods are part of daily life passed down for generations.

I, mr.hotsia, found that the villagers here have a deep connection with nature—from fishing, vegetable growing, animal raising to making tools from natural materials such as coconut leaves woven into baskets or coconut shells used as water containers.

The Charm of Unexpected Journeys and Encounters

This visit to Indawgyi was not just about enjoying nature but also experiencing the real lifestyle of Burmese people in Kachin State. I, mr.hotsia, believe it is worth documenting. Due to inconvenient travel and few tourists, I was able to fully experience the peace and sincerity of the people.

If anyone is interested in experiencing this atmosphere, I recommend planning a trip toIndawgyi Lakeand the surrounding villages where you can see both nature and the charming community lifestyle.
