Authentic Burmese Poisanglong. Mandalay International Airport is located 35 kilometers from Mandalay city center, about a 45-minute drive. At Mandalay Airport, there are taxis to the city. A private taxi costs 15,000 kyats or approximately 15 USD or 450 baht. Shared taxis with others cost 5 USD (150 baht) per person. On the return trip from Mandalay city to the airport, a private taxi costs 300 baht (10,000 kyats). For travelers coming from Thailand via AirAsia,
there is a shuttle bus from the airport to the city, and on the return trip, there is a free bus from the city to the airport. AirAsia's airport shuttle buses run at two times: 12:45 PM and 1:00 PM. Keep your boarding pass handy for convenience, or you can give your name for them to check the passenger list. Using the boarding pass is the easiest. The AirAsia shuttle bus stops at 75th Street intersecting with 26-27 Road. For the return trip from the city to Mandalay Airport, there are two trips:
at 9:00 AM and 9:15 AM. The bus stops at the same location (75th Street, 26-27 Road). On the way from the airport to the city, the bus may drop you off along the route; just provide your hotel address to the AirAsia bus staff. Upon arrival at Mandalay Airport, I recommend exchanging USD to kyats right away. Exchange new 100 USD bills from Thailand for the best rates. The money exchange banks are located near the arrivals exit.
There are two places I noticed for money exchange. Don't hesitate to exchange money before arriving in the city to avoid hassle. Actually, some hotels accept USD, but I calculated that using kyats is more cost-effective. Most transactions in Mandalay use kyats, so exchange enough. In Yangon, USD is used more, while in Naypyidaw, only kyats are used as far as I observed. At Mandalay Airport, departing passengers will find coffee shops and restaurants outside. The airport offers free Wi-Fi without login or purchasing cards.
You can access it immediately, similar to Cambodia, unlike Thailand where signals exist but you need to buy TOT cards somewhere (I might be the only one unaware). After immigration, before boarding, there are a few jade shops, fabric shops, and liquor stores. The interior is not very large but you can buy souvenirs inside. If you want to exchange kyats to Thai baht, do it outside beforehand for peace of mind. I think there might be exchange inside but I did not see any. Inside, before boarding at the gate,
there is also free airport Wi-Fi. In my opinion, the Myanmar immigration officers are very friendly and provide excellent service to tourists. mr.hotsia, August 2013. Book hotels in Mandalay now.
