There are several Tai Yai noodle shops in front of the new market along the main road.
Since the hotel in Taunggyi did not provide breakfast, I walked to eat at the morning market and noodle shops that open early. For lunch and dinner, I ate at Heart Beat Restaurant, located about 100 meters down the alley on the right from Nam Khone Hotel. This restaurant offers fresh coffee and delicious food. The owner is a lovely Tai Yai woman whose father is a photographer (I even asked for her photos to post on the website). Taunggyi has many roadside shops selling Burmese food. Another favorite place I visited is a local Tai Yai noodle shop.
The Tai Yai raw chicken noodle shop — actually, the chicken is not truly raw; the stewed chicken looks raw and unusual in color. The noodles are typical. Check the location from the photo if you want to try it. This is a local favorite. There is also a busy roadside shop selling Khao Soi. I didn’t eat there, but a friend said it was delicious. The shop is located by walking from the raw chicken noodle shop to the main road alley entrance, then turning left. Regarding Tai Yai food in Taunggyi, the market food is similar to Northern Thai cuisine.
There are also Burmese dishes mixed in, including salted fish street food and fermented tofu.
