Travel Lamphun: Saklayom, the Saklapat Tradition, Tan Kuay Sak
Saklayom, the Saklapat Tradition, Tan Kuay Sak http://www.hotsia.com > Travel Lamphun > Saklayom, the Saklapat Tradition, Tan Kuay Sak or Tan Kuay Sak is a Buddhist tradition of the Lanna people. It is a type of Tan Kuay Sak that is as tall as a palmyra palm tree (in the past, there were no scaffolds, so it was made to match the height of the palmyra palm). This event is rarely held and must be done by an unmarried woman under 20 years old, probably so many young men will help. Only wealthy and well-off people can organize it. It may take up to

70 years to make such a tall Saklayom once. The name comes from making the Saklapat tree that is dyed in color. The tall tree you see has branches made from small bamboo sticks, with the tips shaved and dyed in various colors, then inserted into a central core made of rice straw. This is why the tall Saklapat tree is called Saklayom or also known by another name. The term 'Tan Kuay Sak tradition' refers to villagers offering items for merit-making and charity to their karmic creditors on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 12th lunar month every year, also known as "Sart Day."
There are Thai Sart, Lao Sart, and Khmer Sart. I remember as a child getting to eat sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves. For the Lanna people, they bring offerings to make merit and create "Bersak" to offer to monks without specifying which monk. The monks accept them without knowing who brought them. These offerings are gathered and then drawn by lot for the monks, which is why this tradition is called the "Saklapat Tradition." Nowadays, the Tan Sak event is held annually, starting at the main temple.
Then it is held alternately at various temples. Lamphun's event is larger than others because it features traditional Saklayom at every group. It is supported by the government as a tourism promotion tradition and has been held for the past ten years. I myself visited for the first time and was very impressed by the Saklayom event.
