17 during the reign of King Athitayarat, ruler of the Chamadevi dynasty. This place was once his royal residence, which he dedicated as Wat Phra That to honor the Buddha after the relics appeared for him to see in this area. The powder from the relics of Wat Phra That Hariphunchai was used to make the Somdej Chitralada amulet. Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is an important ancient site of Hariphunchai city established by King Athitayarat around the 17th Buddhist century.

It was built to enshrine the sacred relics including the crown bone, chest bone, finger bone, and other small relics filling a full bowl according to Buddhist prophecy. The architectural style of Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, as described in the legend, is a square-shaped prang stupa with gates on all four sides allowing entry and exit. Each corner has a square prang made of laterite, a material abundant in this city.

Inside is a platform for enshrining the reliquary containing the sacred relics. During the reign of King Sanpasi, ruler of the Chamadevi dynasty, he ordered restoration of the original stupa built by King Athitayarat and excavated the gate trenches on all four sides for security. The base shape of the stupa remained the same as a large square prang. When King Mangrai conquered Hariphunchai, he ordered repairs and modifications to the stupa.

This restoration changed the shape of the stupa from a prang style to a round base chedi in the Lanna style. During the reign of King Saen Muang Ma around 1951 BE, the stupa was gilded. In 1990 BE, King Tilokarat, an important ruler of Chiang Mai, together with the great monk Methangkar, raised the height of the stupa to 92 sok and expanded its width and length to 52 sok, forming the shape seen today.
