A seawall was built to prevent tidal water from flowing into the Phanang River, making Pak Phanang today look quiet. There are several swiftlet condos, but it is said not as many as before. However, Pak Phanang has a rich food culture and interesting local lifestyles. I like towns like this—peaceful and with friendly locals. In 2015, I traveled excitingly to Pak Phanang, an ancient port city once rivaling Phuket. It used to be a major fishing and shipping port with swiftlet condos. Today, it looks quiet.
But it still has a food culture and houses worth visiting and photographing. I stayed here for one night and then traveled to Phatthalung on August 9, 2015. Mr.Hotsia stayed at a Pak Phanang hotel costing only a few hundred baht per night. The hotel also runs a restaurant selling traditional Pak Phanang dishes. Delicious! I had a full meal on arrival, probably at a restaurant called Krua Muang Nang something. I enjoyed spicy salad with goby fish roe and fried salted snakehead fish—very tasty. In the morning, I walked through the Pak Phanang morning market, a covered market under a roof.
Then I ate Pak Phanang stir-fried noodles and Pak Phanang chicken rice made with traditional village chicken. Followed by Pak Phanang porridge at a restaurant with partitioned tables—quite unique. Pak Phanang is famous for its noodles, so don’t forget to try them. Pak Phanang has a century-old market, but I arrived in the afternoon and didn’t see much. It is a crowded riverside market at the mouth of the Pak Phanang River in the past. Today, fewer buyers come, but there are still old shops and historic stores that will eventually disappear. So, you should visit before they are gone.
