Every year during the end of Buddhist Lent, fireballs rise and thousands of people come to watch. Streets are full, beds are fully booked, and traffic is heavy. I visited Phon Phisai outside this period, so I found the town quiet.
I experienced the quiet lifestyle of the people in Phon Phisai. During my visit, I stayed at Boon Tawee Hotel, located opposite Rim Fang Khong Hotel. This hotel has two zones, old and new. It is an affordable and good hotel with decent fast internet. The price is 400 baht per night, near the Phon Phisai post office. Other hotels have mid-range prices, not expensive during the fireball festival and winter. From my driving and selection, I think this hotel is okay. For food, I had breakfast and meals at Ocha restaurant.
For dinner, restaurants in Phon Phisai town are hard to find. I found a noodle shop near Bangkok Bank, which was delicious and satisfying. For nightlife with some beer and liquor, someone recommended Suan Por Ta restaurant on Route 212. See the map at http://goo.gl/GJzObl. This place is a nightlife spot for men who enjoy going out. Mr.Hotsia's way of traveling Phon Phisai is to stroll through the morning and evening markets.
Enjoy the Mekong riverside view and find delicious food in town. I recommend eating at Ocha restaurant, very tasty. Don't forget to buy Kun Chiang (Chinese sausage) as a souvenir. Here, it is freshly made, soft, and extremely delicious. In Phon Phisai town by the Mekong River, there is a beautiful Naga statue worth photographing. Also, there is a Thai-Lao market by the Mekong River in the Phon Phisai municipality, open only on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
