If you take a taxi in Bangkok and ask the driver where they are from, many will say Roi Et province. The city of Roi Et itself is quite quiet with not many people because many young adults work in Bangkok. I traveled to Roi Et for the first time alone and stayed for four nights. It's a pleasant city with friendly people and has become one of the cities I am impressed with. Bueng Phlan Chai, located in the city center, is a symbol of the province. It is an island in the middle of a large lake covering about 200,000 square meters. It is a recreational area decorated as a large flower garden with various shady plants. The lake contains many species of fish, and boats are available for the public to paddle around the lake.
Besides that, Bueng Phlan Chai is also used as a venue for provincial festivals and various performances. Within Bueng Phlan Chai, there are several attractions such as the "City Pillar Shrine of Roi Et," which is revered by the locals. There is a large "Walking Buddha" statue in the middle of the flower garden, a "Constitution Offering Tray," and a "Flower Clock." There is also a playground and a health park for exercise, including a fitness area on the island. I have tried it myself, and the equipment is good.
I also went running for exercise at Bueng Phlan Chai because I wanted to live like the people of Roi Et. Around the lake, there are several vendors selling som tam (papaya salad) with mortar and pestle. I recommend trying "Tam Luk Chan" because in my travels, I have never seen this style before. Unfortunately, I did not get to taste it. If you visit Roi Et, please try it for me. Another must-see is the sunset at Bueng Phlan Chai, which is beautiful.
Regarding hotels in Roi Et province, the accommodation areas are not next to Bueng Phlan Chai but are around the moat near Mai Thai Hotel and Saket Nakhon Hotel. Mai Thai Hotel is a large hotel with full services. If you want to stay near the lake, there are some simple hotels starting from 300 baht. You can choose depending on your preference because staying elsewhere means a long walk to the lake. However, if you have your own vehicle, it is a different matter. For cheaper prices than walk-in rates, consider booking in advance.
For mid-range and above hotels, you can book hotels in Roi Et here through Agoda. Before coming to Roi Et, I did not know they had the tallest standing Buddha statue in Thailand (I must have missed the news). It is a standing Buddha 101 sok tall as intended but ended up taller. This golden statue is clearly visible from afar, as if standing guard protecting the people of Roi Et from various dangers.
This standing Buddha is named Phra Rattanamongkol Mahamuni, located at Wat Burapha Phiram. It is 118 sok or 59 meters tall. Known locally as "Luang Pho Yai," this standing Buddha grants blessings and is decorated with tiles and mosaics. I walked almost all over Roi Et city looking for delicious food to share. I found a restaurant called Pakking Honey Roasted Duck. The place looks very old with an old-style Coca-Cola sign. Two elderly vendors sell crispy pork, red pork, and honey roasted duck. What I liked most was the crispy pork; I think they make it delicious, and the sauce complements it well. The duck was a bit tough. Besides searching for tasty food, I also captured city atmosphere photos to share. I especially enjoyed sitting at a Jim Jum restaurant, walking the market, and leisurely strolling around.
