For many decades, people have excavated ancient gold from Sukhothai sites and sold it to a goldsmith named , who purchased it and then engraved the patterns onto it. This gold was then incorporated into gold designs, creating patterns distinct from modern gold. This type of gold is called "Ancient Sukhothai Gold." It is not simply gold that was found and sold, as many mistakenly believe.
Ta Chue opened a gold shop from that time until now, named , located in Si Satchanalai District, Sukhothai Province. The shop still operates today and welcomes tourists to watch the gold crafting process. Thong Sukhothai uses a method of decorating gold patterns and then soldering them onto a mold, unlike modern gold which is carved directly. As for Sukhothai silver or ancient Sukhothai silver, it originated from the Lam Tat shop.
Lam Tat is the name of Uncle Lam Tat. Seeing that there was only ancient gold but no ancient silver, he started making silver patterns based on ancient gold designs, called ancient Sukhothai silver patterns. Uncle Lam Tat's shop has been open for many decades and also demonstrates silver crafting. If you visit Si Satchanalai District, don't miss watching the making of ancient gold and silver crafts here. You don't have to buy anything if you don't want to. I myself visited both shops without purchasing. I have maps and GPS coordinates for the shops.
