When I wrote about the Loy Krathong Festival in Tak Province, I was staying at Sangwun Thai Hotel in Tak with the strong intention to write while being on site.

So tonight, even at midnight, I am still writing. I want to capture the true atmosphere of Loy Krathong night, not writing about it on other days. Future articles will also be written mostly on location. Loy Krathong Sai is the tradition of placing candles and candle wicks inside coconut shells and floating them instead of the usual krathong used in other regions. Loy Krathong Sai is a competitive event, not just individuals floating their krathongs randomly, because that would not form a continuous line. Therefore, competitions are held in each village zone.
Each village floats 1,000 krathongs with a time limit of only 30 minutes to create a beautiful line along the Ping River. There are also performances during the floating. Judging is based on various criteria, and the highest score wins the royal trophy. In 2010, the prize money was 200,000 baht. Many people may have seen pictures of Loy Krathong Sai on the internet or other media and praised its beauty. Today, I sat among the local villagers watching.
Standing and watching, you will see the scene as I photographed. So if you come to see Loy Krathong Sai in person, don't expect it to be extremely perfect, but it is indeed beautiful. Even though the line is not perfectly straight along the river, it still forms a visible line along the Ping River as far as the eye can see. I listened to the announcer explaining that the Ping River has underwater sand sediment that directs the flow of the floating krathongs, making the Loy Krathong Sai in Tak Province exceptionally beautiful. It seems to be true.
When leaving, I walked to the bridge, which offers the best view, and saw the line clearly. I recommend that to see the Loy Krathong Sai in Tak at its best, you should go to the spot where the line is most straight. Sitting by the Ping River bank may not work well. Also, the first set of krathongs starts floating at 7:30 PM, so arriving too early might be boring. Plan your time well. Hotels in Tak are not fully booked; there are still rooms available. I stayed in a 300 baht per night air-conditioned room not far from the event.
So don't worry too much about accommodation. If you want a hotel with a Ping River view, try Wiang Tak Hotel. You can book through the internet links I provide. Enjoy the Loy Krathong Sai next year.
