Umphang is a district known for the Thi Lo Su Waterfall, making it popular among Thai people. Umphang is one of the harder districts to reach because it requires a 3-4 hour drive from Mae Sot depending on driving skills.

Umphang has only one entrance and exit through Mae Sot, making it one of Thailand's hidden towns. Another place I know like this is Omkoi. On this trip, I didn't visit Thi Lo Su Waterfall because it was closed. The term 'waterfall closed' can be confusing for tourists; it means no vehicles are allowed inside, and you must walk in. The vehicle route to Thi Lo Su is closed approximately from June to October. However, the trail remains open year-round for visitors who enter on foot.

But I didn't walk because I wanted to relax in Umphang. On this trip, I spent my free time exploring Umphang town, strolling through the evening market, breathing the fresh air, and visiting Pala Tha Waterfall. Umphang town is quiet and small; you can walk around the whole town quickly. The evening market is small with only a few stalls. I didn't visit the morning market because I stayed out late every night. I watched a performance by students of Umphang Witthayakhom at Tuka Su and had a little drink with P'Woody. I slept in both days.

If you come to Umphang by car, driving yourself is convenient. Travel at your own pace. If you don't have a car, you can take a bus to Mae Sot and then a songthaew (shared pickup truck) to Umphang comfortably. People in Umphang are friendly. Walking around feels like stepping into another world, a hidden town. Here's a clip of walking around Umphang, very relaxing. Example itinerary for a 3-day, 2-night trip to Umphang. I got the map information from a brochure at Pakayo Resort in Umphang. Thanks to Tum, the owner, for letting me take a photo.

I believe this map was made by the Tourism Authority of Thailand or the provincial office. I think this map is very good for those planning to visit Tak province and Umphang.
