Wat Fa Wiang In: The only temple shared by two countries on the Thailand-Myanmar border

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel to Wiang Haeng District, Chiang Mai Province, to visit a unique place in Thailand, which isWat Fa Wiang InA truly special temple because it is the only one I know that is jointly owned by two countries, Thailand and Myanmar. It is located at Ban Laktang, right on the Thailand-Myanmar border, less than 3 kilometers from Ban Piang Luang.

This temple was built since 1857 (B.E. 2400) with distinctive Tai Yai architecture that has been well preserved in its original form. In the past, this area was under the influence of Khun Sa, and Wat Fa Wiang In was part of this territory, not separated as it is today. When Khun Sa surrendered to the Burmese military government, the land around the temple was clearly divided into two sides.

The feeling of seeing a temple belonging to two countries at once

When I arrived at the Thai side of the temple, the first thing that caught my eye was the golden-yellow chedi standing majestically. Looking across the temple courtyard towards the Myanmar side, you can see the bright red roof of the Tai Yai-style ordination hall, which is very beautiful. This temple thus serves as a profound cultural bridge between the two nations.

Additionally, in the temple courtyard there isThe Shrine of King Naresuan the Greatwhich local villagers highly respect. At the foot of the hill behind the temple is the tomb of General Moh Heng, a former Tai Yai leader who played an important role in the local history here.

I must warn all travelers thatEntering the Myanmar side of the temple is strictly prohibitedbecause there have been incidents of injuries caused by stepping on landmines on that side. I received this information from a Shan noodle vendor at Ban Piang Luang.

History and stories of the Tai Yai people from mr.hotsia's perspective

At Wat Fa Wiang In, I found an exhibition area displaying the history of the Tai Yai people, including old photos of Tai Yai leaders and the Shan State princes that I had never seen before. These images are important evidence that helps deeply understand the cultural roots and history of the Tai Yai people in this area.

From conversations with locals and experts, I have gathered and compiled detailed histories of the Tai Yai people for those interested. You can follow these stories in my Wiang Haeng travel article series.mr.hotsiaYear 2010

Travel and atmosphere around Wat Fa Wiang In

Traveling to Wat Fa Wiang In is not too difficult. If you have a private car or rent one from Chiang Mai city, it takes about 3-4 hours through beautiful mountain roads, passing villages and nature that still retain their original charm. Nearby, there is alsothe ruins of Doi Tao Lakewhich I have visited and captured the atmosphere in photos.

Upon arrival at the temple, you will experience the tranquility and lifestyle of the border community that still firmly preserves its traditions. You also have the chance to taste delicious Shan noodles from a Tai Yai vendor who shares fascinating historical stories.

Connections to other attractions in Chiang Mai

If you are interested in exploring the culture and lifestyle of Northern people from a different perspective, I recommend traveling toWat Saen Thong, Omkoi Districtwhich is another temple I was impressed with as much as Wat Fa Wiang In. And if you want to try delicious local food, I often stop byJaeng Muang Restaurant, Mae Chaemwhich offers excellent Khao Soi to try before heading back to Chiang Mai.

Summary of mr.hotsia's impressions of Wat Fa Wiang In

For me, Wat Fa Wiang In is not just a religious site but an amazing cultural and historical connection point between two countries. Seeing a temple belonging to two countries at the same time and experiencing the lifestyle of the Tai Yai people here made me feel this trip was more valuable and profound than I expected.
