Journey to the heart of Amkoi: Saentong Temple and Phra Chao Saentong
When talking about Amkoi District, Chiang Mai Province, many people may think of the tranquility and nature that still preserve the rawness of the mountain forest. But for me, mr.hotsia, the must-do when arriving here is to pay respect toPhra Chao SaentongatSaentong Templewhich is the main temple of Amkoi District that I happened to discover along the way by chance.
The first time I arrived in Amkoi, I parked my car on a small wooden bridge to take photos of the river view and surrounding nature. Walking across the wooden bridge, I found a small temple that looked simple but carried a sacred aura. This Saentong Temple preservesLuang Pho Saentongor what the locals call “Phra Chao Saentong,” a beautifully radiant golden Buddha image. I entered to pay respect and took photos with a feeling of faith and peace.
History of Phra Chao Saentong: Stories from the Past
The information I gathered from the Amkoi District website and stories from local elders revealed that Phra Chao Saentong is not an ordinary Buddha image but has a very interesting background. It is a Chiang Saen era Buddha image, though the exact date of creation is unclear. Legend says Phra Chao Saentong was brought from central Thailand, in the Lopburi area, by Queen Chamthewi, the ruler of Lamphun city, who brought the image northward.
In the past, most travel was by water. Queen Chamthewi traveled by boat down the Ping River, bringing Phra Chao Saentong to be enshrined at Doi Koeng Temple in Hod District. During the war with Burma, the Buddha image had to be hidden in the forest near Doi Koeng Temple at a place called “Huai Saentong.” Over 700 years later, the Lua people in Amkoi discovered and enshrined Phra Chao Saentong at Saentong Temple, where it remains today.
Travel and Atmosphere Around Saentong Temple
Visiting Saentong Temple is not very difficult. Although the road to Amkoi is winding and challenging, upon arrival you will experience a peaceful atmosphere and the unique culture of the Lua tribe. I enjoyed walking around the temple; the wooden bridge where I parked became a great photo spot overlooking the river and lush green mountains surrounding the area.
The locals here have strong faith in Phra Chao Saentong, and because Saentong Temple is located in the Lua tribal area, I witnessed a blend of religion and traditional customs, such as circumambulation during important tribal ceremonies. The temple’s architecture and ritual sites resemble ancient temples nearby, like Wat Phra Borom That Doi Koeng in Doi Tao District, which I have previously written about inThe Story of Visiting Wat Phra Borom That Doi Koeng
Connection with Life and Nature in Amkoi
Amkoi is a district rich in cultural diversity and well-preserved nature. I saw the Lua people maintaining their traditions and traditional lifestyle firmly. Visiting Saentong Temple felt like experiencing living history and learning about the deep bond between people and nature around the Ping River flowing through the area.
If you enjoy deep cultural and historical travel like me, mr.hotsia, I recommend you start your journey from Chiang Mai city and stop byDoi Tao Lake Ruinswhich is nearby to gain new perspectives on nature and the environment in northern Thailand.
The Charm of Amkoi That mr.hotsia Travelers Must Not Miss
For me, visiting Saentong Temple was not just about paying respect but about truly discovering something new. I did not know about this temple beforehand; it was a chance encounter when I crossed a small wooden bridge and found a temple with such a profound story. This is the charm of mr.hotsia-style travel—not just seeing places but experiencing stories and local people.
On the way back, I also stopped to try local food and chat with villagers at the local market. The atmosphere was warm and friendly before heading to other Chiang Mai attractions I have recommended before, such asA Hunter’s Camp by the Ping Riverwhich will show you the northern lifestyle from a different perspective.
Summary of Impressions from Saentong Temple, Amkoi
If you have the chance to visit Amkoi, don’t forget to stop by Saentong Temple to pay respect to Phra Chao Saentong, a sacred figure revered by locals and part of the proud Lanna history of northern Thailand. This temple is not only a religious site but also an open-air museum telling the story of the people and culture deeply connected to this land.
I, mr.hotsia, recommend you experience it yourself, and you will realize that true travel is not just about the destination but every step where we touch and learn from the places we visit.
