Travel to Ob Luang: Walk Across the Ob Luang Bridge - A natural beauty you must experience yourself
I, mr.hotsia, have had the opportunity to travel to Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son Province, many times. Every time I pass this route, I always stop at Ob Luang. Although Ob Luang is located in Chiang Mai Province, the main route to Mae Hong Son via Mae Sariang passes through Ob Luang almost every traveler. Therefore, I take this opportunity to share my experiences and detailed information about this place.
Ob Luang is a spectacular narrow mountain gorge carved by the Mae Chaem River. It is located at kilometer 17 of Highway 108, which borders Hang Dong Subdistrict, Hot District, and Ban Pae Subdistrict, Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai Province. The uniqueness of Ob Luang lies in the steep cliffs flanking the Mae Chaem River, forming a deep canyon shaped by nature over a long time. The depth from the Ob Luang Bridge to the water level is about 32 meters, and the narrowest part of the gorge is only 2 meters wide. The length of this narrow gorge is approximately 300 meters, making it an exciting spot for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
The word “Ob” or “Op” in the local language means a narrow gorge, while “Luang” means large. Together, “Ob Luang” refers to a large narrow gorge through which the Mae Chaem River flows. This gorge is like a canyon with a stream running through it, serving as one of the most stunning natural viewpoints in Northern Thailand.
When you arrive at Ob Luang, my top recommendation as mr.hotsia is to walk across the wooden suspension bridge built above the gorge. This bridge is not only sturdy but also sways slightly when the wind blows or when people walk across it, making the experience exciting and challenging. You will fully feel the height and depth of the gorge. The cool breeze blowing throughout the walk keeps the atmosphere refreshing and not too hot, even during the day.
Besides the bridge, within the Ob Luang area, there is a viewpoint that requires a slight climb up a small hill, where I have recorded a video for you to see. From this viewpoint, you can see the main road connecting Hot and Mae Sariang winding beautifully through the hills. The cool breeze and wide panoramic view made me stop to take photos and enjoy the atmosphere longer than expected.
Another special feature of Ob Luang is the traces of ancient humans found in the area. Although not very prominent or detailed, they show the relationship between people and nature in the past. However, most visitors focus more on the bridge and the beautiful rock formations.
The nature at Ob Luang is incredibly beautiful and mysterious. The sound of flowing water hitting the rapids creates a misty spray and a constant roaring sound. The rocks, eroded continuously by the water currents for many years and decades, have formed unique and stunning patterns and shapes. I myself wonder how the large rocks blocking the water path were split or passed through by the river.
I spent about one hour at Ob Luang, enough time to walk across the bridge, take photos, and climb up to the viewpoint. After that, I continued my journey to Mae Sariang, a small, peaceful town with its own charm. Known as a source of high-quality Salawin fish, here I tasted fresh Salawin fish, which is hard to find in big cities. It was a trip that perfectly completed my travel experience.
For those planning to travel to Mae Hong Son via the Hot-Mae Sariang route, Ob Luang is a very interesting stopover point, almost like a gateway to this route. Although it is not the main destination for most tourists, for me, mr.hotsia, this place is a natural corner you must experience yourself. If you enjoy adventure and nature photography, I guarantee Ob Luang will not disappoint you.

Also, remember to relax and immerse yourself in the grandeur of nature here. I, mr.hotsia, assure you will be deeply impressed and never forget this experience.
