Travel to Phrao District, Chiang Mai, a peaceful town nestled in the valley that many overlook

I, mr.hotsia, recently had the opportunity to visit Phrao District, Chiang Mai Province, a town that many may not be very familiar with. Phrao is located in the middle of a valley. Traveling here is not easy unless you drive through the winding roads from Chiang Dao or Wiang Pa Pao. Due to its challenging terrain and the peaceful simplicity of this town, Phrao has impressively preserved its traditional way of life.

I decided to stay here for one night to truly experience the atmosphere of this small town that few talk about. Upon arriving in Phrao, the first thing I noticed was the tranquility, very different from the famous tourist cities in Chiang Mai. Most houses and shops still use traditional wooden structures. I hardly see wooden houses like this in Pai anymore, which has changed a lot. Walking through the night market in Phrao one evening was a very memorable experience. The market has only a few food stalls, but the atmosphere is warm and friendly.

One small grilled pork restaurant I tried exceeded my expectations in taste. The Anamai roti at the night market was so delicious I had to buy it again. Strolling along the street in front of the district office on a cool evening was a relaxing time where I truly experienced the lifestyle of the people of Phrao.

Accommodation in Phrao with classic wooden house atmosphere

For those who want to relax close to nature and experience local life, I recommend bungalow-style accommodations with reasonable prices, about 300 baht per night. I chose to stay at83 BungalowsHere, besides the traditional wooden house atmosphere, there is relatively fast WiFi service at night. Although it may disconnect sometimes in the late morning, it is sufficient for travelers who want to truly rest. If anyone wants more luxurious accommodation in Phrao, there are options, but prices are higher and some places may have uncertain internet connectivity.

Travel and explore routes around Phrao

Traveling to Phrao District is not as convenient as other popular tourist cities. I traveled by private car, taking the route through Chiang Dao and crossing the mountains to the other side. Driving through the mountains and winding roads requires great caution, but the reward is beautiful scenery and the peacefulness of a town many overlook.

Additionally, if anyone is interested in culture and nearby important sites, I recommend stopping byVisit Saen Thong Amkoi Templewhich is not far from Phrao. This temple houses the revered Phra Chao Saeng Thong, highly respected by locals. It is another perspective that helps deepen understanding of Lanna culture and Northern beliefs.

Phrao night market with rare local foods

The night market in Phrao District impressed me greatly. Although there are fewer shops than markets in big cities, everything feels warm and charming in a rustic way that is hard to find nowadays. I tasted the Anamai roti, which was sweet and creamy but not too rich, and tried grilled pork at a small market stall. The marinated pork was rich and flavorful, a simple dish that made me feel like I was eating with locals.

If you enjoy walking markets and tasting local food, I believe just one night in Phrao will let you fully feel the warmth and charm of this town.

Phrao and its connection to Chiang Mai and nearby attractions

Although Phrao is quiet and not very popular yet, its proximity to Chiang Mai allows convenient travel plans to other attractions. For example, if you travel to Chiang Mai and want to try something new without the crowds, I recommend stopping by Phrao as a resting point.

Also, visitingthe Doi Tao Lake Ruinsor even learning abouta hunter along the Ping Riverwill add diverse and deeper perspectives to your journey.

Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia

For me, visiting Phrao District this time felt like opening a new world of travel in Chiang Mai. This is not a famous tourist city nor does it have many conveniences, but Phrao has a unique charm that is hard to find elsewhere. The tranquility, traditional way of life, well-preserved wooden houses, and simple night market are what made me feel this trip was truly worthwhile.

If you want to escape the hustle of big cities and seek a travel experience close to nature and authentic Northern lifestyle, I, mr.hotsia, recommend you try experiencing Phrao at least once. I guarantee you will love it and want to come back again.
