Driving Trip to Doi Chang, the Land of Coffee and Hill Tribe Culture in Chiang Rai
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take everyone up to Doi Chang, Chiang Rai Province, on a route I drove myself and experienced firsthand since June 2013, during the rainy season when the fog is thick and everything looks lush and fresh. Doi Chang is known for its coffee sold all over Thailand. Many have tasted it but never knew how the coffee is grown. This place is my destination to see the coffee cultivation way of life and truly experience the atmosphere of the hill tribe villages on the mountain.
The Route to Doi Chang I Chose to Drive
I started my journey from Chiang Rai city, driving through Wiang Pa Pao and Mae Suai along the main Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai route. I looked for the sign to Doi Chang and Doi Wawee, turning left not far from Mae Suai. This sign is an important point that many tourists pass by without stopping, but I highly recommend turning in because this route leads us into the coffee community and the authentic hill tribe way of life.
From this junction, I drove about 20 kilometers to find a right turn to ascend Doi Chang for another 10-20 kilometers. This route is more convenient and safer than other ways up Doi Chang, which have narrow roads and pass through rural villages. I wanted to capture that atmosphere too, but for this trip, I chose the main route for peace of mind and to enjoy the roadside views.
Akha and Lisu Hill Tribe Villages and Coffee as Life
Doi Chang is a small village, home to the Akha and Lisu hill tribes, who mostly grow coffee as their main occupation. I spoke with P'Tum, the resort owner where I stayed on the mountain. He was very kind and brewed authentic Doi Chang coffee for me to taste—the coffee grown and harvested right here. The aroma and flavor were unlike any coffee I've had in the city. This charm is what makes Doi Chang coffee famous nationwide.
Besides coffee, I also tried an Akha-style omelet that P'Tum made for my partner, which included “Akha green onions,” a local spice. The taste was rich and flavorful with a unique aroma. I think eating local food like this is another memorable highlight of this trip.
Accommodation and Atmosphere on Doi Chang
There are not many accommodations on Doi Chang, about four places, divided between government agencies and private hill tribe operators. I chose to stay at “Doi Chang Resort,” which has beautiful views of the mountain ridges and sea of mist in the morning. The atmosphere is cool and comfortable even in the rainy season. At night, it gets chilly enough to wear a light jacket. It was a peaceful rest and a true nature experience.
Most tourists who come to Doi Chang prefer to rent resort cars to see the sunrise or sunset, when the fog and light are most beautiful. I didn’t have the budget to rent a car, so I drove myself to explore the hill tribe villages and take photos of the scenery instead. It was a simple but impressive experience.
Food on Doi Chang
Food on Doi Chang is mostly included in accommodations as breakfast. For dinner, I ordered from “Doi Chang Kitchen,” which offers beautiful views to dine with or convenient delivery to the resort. I recommend dining at Doi Chang Kitchen to enjoy mountain views in a relaxed atmosphere. If you prefer authentic local food, visit the hill tribe villages to taste traditional dishes that are hard to find in big cities.
The Charm of Driving Up Doi Chang in the Rainy Season
One of my favorite impressions is the drive up and down Doi Chang filled with fog and lush greenery in the rainy season. You can see coffee plantations and local gardens alternating with mountain views stretching as far as the eye can see. The roads may be wet and slippery during this season, but the freshness and natural feeling are greater than other seasons. If you plan to drive up Doi Chang, I recommend preparing your vehicle well and driving carefully.

After visiting Doi Chang, I recommend spending a night or two in Chiang Rai city to experience the old town atmosphere and visit important attractions such asWat Rong KhunBeautiful and deeply meaningful, or stroll through the Night Bazaar and Saturday Walking StreetKad Chiang Rai Ram LuekTo taste local food and buy souvenirs

Summary of the Driving Experience to Doi Chang
For me, going up Doi Chang is not just about seeing beautiful views or sipping famous Doi Chang coffee, but about experiencing the lifestyle of the Akha and Lisu hill tribes. Seeing real coffee cultivation, walking in the village, eating an Akha-style omelet made with heart, and driving through thick fog that envelops everything—these experiences made me feel that “a good journey is about truly experiencing the local people's life.”
If anyone wants to taste authentic Doi Chang coffee and escape the hustle of Chiang Rai city for a day or two, I highly recommend driving up Doi Chang. I guarantee you will fall in love with this mountain just like mr.hotsia.
