Exciting travel in Phan District, Chiang Rai Province with mr.hotsia

When people think of Chiang Rai, many probably think of Wat Rong Khun or the clock tower with its light and sound show. But this time, mr.hotsia takes you off the main route to explore a small district located between Phayao and Chiang Rai, which isPhan DistrictA place many people still don’t know well and often just drive past quickly because it is only 49 kilometers from Chiang Rai city.

I arrived in Phan District during theCandle Festivalwhich was the perfect timing to truly see the colors and lifestyle of the local people. This event is not just a grand show like the one we are familiar with in Ubon Ratchathani Province, but here it has a strong community spirit. Villages work together to organize the event fully. Each subdistrict has its own parade and performances. The intricately carved candles made me hardly believe this was at a district level, not a national one.

The atmosphere of Khlong Thom Market and delicious food

Phan District is not only good during festivals. Khlong Thom Market in the district center is another spot you shouldn’t miss. This is a large indoor market open in the evening, offering both food and goods to choose from. I walked around and tasted many dishes, especially the clay pot noodles which were very delicious. This is a dish I was impressed with and recommend you try if you come here. There is also a khao jeen nam ngiao (Northern Thai rice noodles with spicy pork sauce) shop near the district office. The route from the district office to the 7-Eleven is where I stopped to eat because the nam ngiao had a truly rich and intense flavor.

If you are interested in accommodation, Phan District has budget hotels such asChiang Tung Hotelwhere I stayed this time. The fan room costs only 350 baht, while the air-conditioned room is 500 baht. I chose the fan room because the weather was cool and the atmosphere quiet, suitable for those who want to stay economically and experience the authentic local atmosphere.

Phra That Chom Waeh, a must-visit worship site

If you come to Phan District, don’t forget to pay respects atPhra That Chom WaehOne of the nine famous chedis of Chiang Rai. This stupa is located on a small hill. You can drive up or walk up to enjoy the view. I chose to walk up to experience the peaceful surroundings and see the panorama of Phan town from above. This place feels very serene and is a great spot for mental relaxation.

Lifestyle and simplicity experienced in Phan District

Phan District is a small town that still preserves the simplicity of Northern city life very well. Walking around the market and main streets, you will see locals dressed simply, chatting casually. The atmosphere is not as hectic as Chiang Rai city but not too quiet either. I really liked this feeling because it reminded me of the past and the traditional way of life that still remains in the community.

For tourists planning to visit Chiang Rai and wanting to go off the main route, I recommend trying to visit Phan District once and compare it with traveling inChiang Rai city centeror visitingWat Rong Khunwhich is world-famous. Visiting Phan District will complete and deepen your Chiang Rai travel experience.

Travel tips from mr.hotsia

Traveling to Phan District is quite convenient. If you drive from Chiang Rai city, it takes just over half an hour. I recommend driving yourself so you can stop and explore along the way and control your schedule freely. When I went, it was the rainy season, the weather was cool and the roads were not too slippery, perfect for a relaxed driving trip.

For those who want accommodation in Chiang Rai city before or after visiting Phan District, mr.hotsia recommendsAffordable and good hotels in Chiang Rai citywhere I have stayed and was very impressed. The location is good, near the clock tower and market, with many restaurants and cafes around to stop by before continuing your journey.

Summary of mr.hotsia’s impressions of Phan District

For me, Phan District is a small destination full of charm and worth exploring. Whether it’s the candle parade showing community unity, Khlong Thom Market full of local food and goods, Phra That Chom Waeh offering peace and beautiful views, or the genuine warmth of the people here, everything blends perfectly making me want to return again.

If you come to Chiang Rai, don’t forget to fully exploreChiang Rai cityand try to find time to experience something new in Phan District. I guarantee you will discover a different and warm side of Chiang Rai that is just as special as anywhere else.
