Sakaeo Province: A Borderland Beyond Being a New Province

Hello, I am mr.hotsia. I had the opportunity to visit Sakaeo Province and would like to share my story. This province is one of Thailand's newer provinces, established in 1993. When it comes to urban development, it’s not flashy. Sakaeo town has no clock tower, no fountain roundabout, and no grand landmarks like other provinces. But what Sakaeo offers and impresses is its simplicity and the warm, friendly local lifestyle.

When I strolled around Sakaeo town, my first impression was that it is peaceful. Few shops are open, mostly small family-run businesses. Nearby, there is a school for training fighting buffaloes, which sounds unusual for a city person like me. Also, at the city pillar shrine, there is a beautiful city pillar that symbolizes the importance of this province well, even though there are no luxurious tourist spots or large shopping centers.

Travel and Accommodation in Sakaeo

For travelers interested in visiting this province, getting here is not difficult. I chose to take a bus from Bangkok to Sakaeo, which took about 4-5 hours on a fairly convenient route. Upon arrival in town, finding a hotel is easy. The hotel I stayed at cost about 700 baht per night and offered Wi-Fi service. It was worth it for a restful stay in the peaceful atmosphere of this small town.

If you want more affordable accommodation, I recommend booking throughAgodain advance, because the number of hotels in town is limited, and walk-ins may find no available rooms.

Exciting Border Districts: Aranyaprathet and Rong Kluea Market

One interesting aspect of Sakaeo Province is its border districts like Aranyaprathet and Rong Kluea Market. Aranyaprathet borders Cambodia and has an open border that encourages trade and cultural exchange between the two countries. Rong Kluea Market, also known as Ban Khlong Luek Border Market, is famous for trading a wide variety of goods, especially second-hand clothes and products from Cambodia.

I haven’t had the chance to fully explore Rong Kluea Market yet, but from talking with locals, this market used to be a salt storage area for export to Cambodia before transforming into the trading market it is today. Especially after the unrest in Cambodia from 1979 to 1993, this market became a major economic and border trade center for Sakaeo.

Taste and Atmosphere of Local Food in Sakaeo

Food is another thing that impressed me greatly when visiting Sakaeo. I tried dishes at Jakawan Restaurant, a Thai restaurant in town. The atmosphere was simple but the flavors were extraordinary. They serve local Thai dishes that are spicy and suit a Bangkok palate like mine. This restaurant is located in Sakaeo town. For more details, check outKrua Jakawan Sakaeo Restaurant

Before arriving in Sakaeo, I stopped to eat at Krua Mor Oi Restaurant, located on the route from Buriram heading to Sakaeo. This restaurant was recommended by locals as large and clean, suitable for travelers wanting to rest and eat before entering Sakaeo Province. I ordered soft-flesh fish with chili sauce, which was perfectly spicy and made me feel the restaurant truly cares about flavor. They also offer various dishes like beef and pork noodles, stewed pork leg rice, and stir-fried basil with stewed beef, all equally delicious.

Connecting with Cambodia: The Start of an ASEAN Adventure

Sakaeo Province borders Cambodia, making it an important gateway for tourists wishing to travel to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat in Cambodia, one of the world-class destinations every traveler should visit at least once.

From Aranyaprathet town, it’s easy to travel to Poipet and then take a bus or tuk-tuk to Siem Reap within a few hours. This makes Sakaeo a good stopover or connection point for both Thai and international travelers interested in cultural and historical tourism in this region.

Summary of Experience with Sakaeo Province by mr.hotsia

Sakaeo is a province I feel is perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of big cities. With its peaceful atmosphere, simple lifestyle, and warm local hospitality, even though the town lacks flashy tourist spots, it’s a great choice for travelers who enjoy chill trips, authentic local life, and spicy local food.

I, mr.hotsia, plan to return for another trip crossing into Cambodia because I feel this province has much more to discover, including the markets, Rong Kluea, and the unique border atmosphere.
