Ban Taklang Elephant Village, Surin Province: Experience the lifestyle of elephants and mahouts with mr.hotsia

When talking about Surin Province, many people think of elephants and the perfectly blended Khmer culture. I, mr.hotsia, am one of those who love traveling to places where you can truly experience the way of life. This time, I intentionally came to Ban Taklang Elephant Village, a famous elephant village in Surin Province, located about 60 kilometers from Surin city. Simply put, it’s on the route I drove from Sisaket to Satuek District, so I took the opportunity to stop by and experience the atmosphere of the elephants and locals here.

Ban Taklang Elephant Village is not just an ordinary tourist spot but a community where mahouts still remarkably preserve their traditional way of life. There are homestays where visitors can stay with real mahouts. I once stopped by to watch the elephant shows during the day, which have two sessions at 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM. The shows feature elephants demonstrating various skills, such as painting and other impressive talents.

But what I liked most was staying with the mahouts at the homestay, sleeping in a simple wooden house, listening to the community stories, and seeing elephants roaming around the house. The feeling was like stepping back in time when people and elephants lived closely bonded, more than anywhere else I’ve seen. The environment here is peaceful, the air is fresh, and the warmth from the smiling locals genuinely welcoming tourists is heartwarming.

Getting to Ban Taklang Elephant Village is not difficult. If you come from Surin city, I recommend renting a car or hiring a car because the road from Surin to the elephant village is quite good and passes through lush green rice fields, which is a pleasant view. For more travel information, you can contact the Elephant Study Center or Ban Taklang Elephant Village directly at 044-517461, 044-145050, or the Tourism Authority of Thailand Surin Office at 044-514447-8, 044-518529.

I still remember the first time I went to Surin, I didn’t stop by the elephant village because we were exploring Surin city and nearby areas, such as the Surin morning market, which I really liked because it offers fresh local products, rare local snacks like Khanom Chok, and a simple yet lively atmosphere (read more atSurin Morning Market). This time, I had the chance to visit the elephant village, which showed me a different side of Surin Province that I had never experienced before.

Surin itself is a very interesting province because it has the Khmer culture still present in the daily life of the locals, and it also offers diverse attractions such as Chong Jom Checkpoint, an international border crossing between Thailand and Cambodia (read mr.hotsia’s experience atChong Jom Checkpoint - Surin Province / O Smach - Oddar Meanchey Province), as well as Surin Walking Street with its homely atmosphere, perfect for an evening stroll (read more atSurin Walking Street)

). Back to Ban Taklang Elephant Village, most locals here still raise elephants for traditional ceremonies and shows, as well as to meet the demand of tourists who want close encounters with elephants. Sometimes I saw elephants roaming in the grass fields around the village. This kind of atmosphere is rare in big cities. Visiting and staying here feels like stopping time to immerse in nature and the local way of life.

For those who enjoy tasting local food, I recommend trying the dishes at Mae Phim Grilled Fish restaurant in Surin city, where I was impressed by the fresh and spicy sea bass miang (read my review atMae Phim Grilled Fish) or visiting the morning market to experience the community atmosphere and buy fresh local food, which is an unmissable experience.

I, mr.hotsia, would like to say that visiting Ban Taklang Elephant Village is not just about watching elephant shows but truly experiencing the life of people who love and care for elephants closely. If I have the chance next time, I plan to stay overnight here to capture the unique memories and atmosphere in my travel life.
