Leuk Nok Tha, exploring the charm of an ancient community in Yasothon where the painted snipes once hid

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to revisit the beauty of Yasothon city once again, and this time my destination is “Leuk Nok Tha,” a name that sounds unusual but is full of stories I sincerely want to share. Leuk Nok Tha, or more simply “Loeng Nok Tha,” is the name of a community and watershed area with a much deeper history than many realize.

The name “Loeng Nok Tha” has an interesting meaning in itself. “Loeng” means lowland or basin with water pools, while “Nok Tha” refers to a type of bird that once densely inhabited this area. If you ask me whether those painted snipes can still be seen today... I must honestly say they are almost gone, as the environment has changed significantly with settlements and livelihoods established by people, gradually reducing the original nature. However, the memory and meaning of the name remain in the hearts of Leuk Nok Tha residents and all people of Yasothon.

Looking back at the morning market and the still vibrant community lifestyle

About 20 years ago, I visited Yasothon when my uncle worked at the Government Savings Bank. Back then, the morning market near the bank was very lively. Vendors sold fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and local foods laid out on the street. I still vividly remember that atmosphere, as if time had rewound to the old days when people lived much closer to each other.

Today, although I didn’t walk through the Leuk Nok Tha morning market directly, I found a large painted snipe statue in front of a school in the community. It serves as a symbol reminding us that this place was once a dense habitat for painted snipes. I took photos and want to share with everyone that the history of this area has not disappeared.

Visiting Leuk Nok Tha should not miss the chance to try the famous Yasothon pickled fish, which I have described in my articleTravel Joyfully in YasothonandThe Best Yasothon Pickled Fishso delicious it must be shared

The Yasothon morning market remains a hub of local food and lifestyle that I always enjoy exploring.Yasothon Morning Marketis where I experience the most authentic local atmosphere, from the aroma of soft-boiled egg coffee to friendly conversations. It’s a great starting point before exploring various communities around the city.
