Open the door to Kalasin with mr.hotsia: A unique Isan trip
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to arrive in Kalasin Province after traveling through Cambodia and Laos, then entering via Ubon Ratchathani, and taking a bus to Roi Et, Kalasin, and Maha Sarakham. On this trip, I chose to explore deeply in the city, find delicious food, and truly experience the lifestyle of the Kalasin people.
First impressions upon arriving in Kalasin city
Kalasin is famous for dinosaurs, which is evident from the signs and atmosphere in the city. But for me, what impressed me the most was not the dinosaurs, but “Kut Nam Kin,” a large pond in the center of Kalasin city that has become a public park for locals to exercise in the morning and evening. I really enjoyed the evening atmosphere here: sunset, cool breeze, families walking, children playing, and elderly people exercising simply.
In the middle of the park, there is a free outdoor fitness area, symbolizing the health consciousness of Kalasin people. Around Kut Nam Kin, there are two restaurants open for service, and if anyone wants to stay nearby, there is no need to worry as there are about four hotels. I chose to stay by Kut Nam Kin, enjoying beautiful views and convenient access for morning and evening walks. There is also a nearby famous coffee shop and spa calledKalafeI tried their Thai massage mixed with moringa and was very impressed. The shop atmosphere is nice, the owner is friendly, and I enjoyed cold coffee with WiFi, perfect for relaxing after traveling.
Deep dive into lifestyle and food in Kalasin
Food is another charm I didn’t miss, especially “Mum Kalasin,” which many may know to eat in Somdet or Khao districts. But since I didn’t have a private car, I asked locals and found a popular Mum restaurant among city residents calledPa Taen Restaurantlocated next to the Kalasin bus station. The atmosphere is simple but the taste is extraordinary. The Mum here is very delicious, and the grilled chicken is tender with traditional spices. I ate here before taking a van to Maha Sarakham and I can say I was truly not disappointed.
When I travel, I usually choose to eat what locals really eat, not places set up just for tourists. Here, I clearly saw the kindness of Kalasin people, for example, when I took a tuk-tuk without asking the price first, the driver charged much less than I expected. Also, when I asked for directions toKalasin Night Marketa young man on a motorcycle came to give me a ride all the way there. This is the “kindness of Kalasin people” that I truly applaud.
Kalasin Night Market: A hub of food and nightlife lifestyle
Speaking of the night market I visited one evening, it is located a few hundred meters from the bus station. I asked local kids for directions and was lucky they gave me a ride on a motorcycle. Kalasin Night Market is unlike traditional night markets because it is inside a building with a high roof, surrounded by shops like a food court in a shopping mall. It looks clean and has excellent ventilation.
Here, there are many made-to-order food stalls with long lines of locals. I ordered food to take back to my accommodation, and the taste was very satisfying. There are also local snacks such asKhao Jee Kalasinor grilled sticky rice coated with egg, fragrant with egg aroma and perfectly crispy. It’s a snack I really liked and recommend everyone to try.
Districts and destinations waiting to be discovered in Kalasin
Kalasin Province is not just the city; there are many districts that mr.hotsia wants to recommend, such as Namon, Kamalasai, Rong Kham, Kuchinarai, Khao Wong, Yang Talat, Huai Mek, Sahatsakhan, Kham Muang, Tha Khantho, Nong Kung Si, Somdet, Huai Phueng, Sam Chai, Na Khu, Don Chan, and Khong Chai. I have collected information about subdistricts, schools, and temples on the district pages of hotsia.com, suitable for travelers who want to go beyond the city to deeply experience local lifestyles.
My future plan is to return with a private car to travel and stay in each district, especially those inhabited by the Phu Thai people. I intend to stay in homestays to learn about the culture and fully try local foods. Of course, mr.hotsia will capture photos and great stories to share with everyone again.
Summary of my Kalasin travel experience with mr.hotsia
Kalasin is a province where I truly felt the simplicity and warmth of rural Isan life. Delicious food, the kindness of locals, and tourist attractions that focus not only on fame but on letting us experience the real lives of people, such as Kut Nam Kin, which is both a public park and community center, the clean and well-managed night market, cozy coffee shops like Kalafe, and the Mum Pa Taen restaurant that must be recommended.
If anyone wants to travel Kalasin not superficially like typical articles, I recommend following my footsteps, mr.hotsia, to experience the sincerity of Kalasin people. Don’t forget to book hotels in advance, especially during festivals or long holidays, for the best prices and convenience.
