Thrilling experience at Phu Thok, Bueng Kan Province, with the adventure of climbing cliffside stairs

When talking about Bueng Kan Province, many might think of the tranquility of a small town by the Mekong River or the atmosphere of old wooden houses that still preserve traditional ways of life. But for me, mr.hotsia, the destination that truly brings excitement and challenge is “Phu Thok” in Seka District, Bueng Kan Province.

Phu Thok is not just an ordinary mountain; it is a meditation retreat where Wat Phu Thok has built stairs along the steep cliff to provide monks with isolated living quarters away from the outside world. For ordinary travelers like us who love adventure and want a safe thrill, we can climb up to enjoy the beautiful views at the summit. However, calling the climb “easy” would be an exaggeration because all the thrill comes from climbing the steep stairs that take about 30 minutes for me while filming along the way.

These stairs are not ordinary stairs; they are constructed and anchored on iron cliffs connected as a skywalk. There are very dangerous spots where a single misstep could result in a fatal fall. I, mr.hotsia, would like to remind everyone to be very careful when climbing Phu Thok. Do not play around or run on the stairs, and importantly, avoid using selfie sticks or making loud noises that could disturb the monks still practicing meditation on this mountain.

Travel and Surrounding Atmosphere of Phu Thok

Wat Phu Thok is located in Seka District, about 30 kilometers from Bueng Kan town and around 20 kilometers from Seka itself. The journey here is not too difficult, but you must prepare physically because climbing Phu Thok requires strong legs and determination. I, mr.hotsia, took about half an hour to climb the stairs with breaks along the way because the initial part is very steep. But once you reach the upper levels, you will feel the cool breeze and enjoy beautiful views that make you forget the fatigue.

The highlight of Phu Thok is walking on the iron bridge anchored on the cliff, making you feel like you are floating in the air. You can see panoramic views all around, especially the Mekong River flowing through Bueng Kan Province nearby. It is a beautiful and peaceful scene rarely seen.

Bueng Kan Province, a small riverside town by the Mekong that you must visit

For those who want to continue exploring after Phu Thok, I recommend checking outBueng Kan Provincewhich recently separated from Nong Khai Province. This province still maintains simplicity, tranquility, and interesting culture, especially the old wooden houses that give a warm atmosphere like stepping back in time.

Bueng Kan is located on the wide Mekong Riverbank where you can clearly see the Laos side. If you have enough time, I suggest crossing over to visit the Laos side atPakxanwhich is the town opposite Bueng Kan. The two sides of the river share close cultural and lifestyle connections.

Local Lifestyle and Must-Try Foods

After completing the climb at Phu Thok, I, mr.hotsia, like to find delicious food in Bueng Kan town, a small town with limited but excellent local restaurants. Especially the rice noodle soup, a popular breakfast among locals. The place I like to eat is opposite Samanmitr Hotel. Their rice noodle soup has a unique, home-style flavor that everyone should try.

There are also other delicious dishes such asBueng Kan Fried Oyster, Crispy Pork Basil Stir-fry, Bueng Kan, andKale with Crispy Porkwhich I, mr.hotsia, have tasted and can say the flavors are truly exceptional.

Precautions and Recommendations for Those Climbing Phu Thok

I, mr.hotsia, want to emphasize safety for everyone planning to climb Phu Thok. Although this place is beautiful and exciting, it carries high risks. The steep stairs and long path can easily cause accidents if not careful. Therefore, prepare your body well and avoid bringing people with health problems or elderly without proper preparation.

Also, when climbing Phu Thok, please behave respectfully because this is still a meditation site for monks. No loud noises, selfie sticks, or photography equipment that might disturb the monks. Let’s help maintain the peace and good atmosphere of this place.

Summary of the Phu Thok Experience with mr.hotsia

Phu Thok, Bueng Kan Province, is a place I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend for those who enjoy both challenge and tranquility. Climbing the cliffside stairs can be thrilling and tiring, but once you reach the top and see the vast views and unique atmosphere, you will feel every step was worth it.

If you enjoy travel that combines nature, local lifestyle, and cultural learning, you should not miss Phu Thok. And don’t forget to experience the way of life of Bueng Kan people and try the unique local dishes as well.
