Wat Ahong, the Navel of the Mekong River: The deepest natural viewpoint on the Mekong River in Bueng Kan Province

When talking about Bueng Kan, a small province recently separated from Nong Khai, many people might still be unfamiliar with the name. But for me, mr.hotsia, visiting here felt like opening a new world of simple yet powerful travel. One of the places I wholeheartedly recommend isWat Ahong Silawatalso known as “Wat Ahong,” located about 20 kilometers from Bueng Kan town on the same route from Nong Khai.

This temple is not only remarkable for its beautiful architecture or peaceful atmosphere but is also known as“the Navel of the Mekong River,”which refers to the deepest point of the Mekong River during the rainy season, measured at up to 200 meters deep. The river here is about 300-400 meters wide. The Thai side is a flat plain with no mountains visible, unlike the Lao side about 5 kilometers away, where tall mountains stand prominently as a backdrop.

What amazed me and made me a bit nervous was the constantly swirling current. Even standing on the riverbank, you can feel the power of nature here. The water looks intimidating and mysterious, so I didn’t dare to take a small fishing boat out. For those who enjoy challenges or want to experience the atmosphere up close, caution is advised because there could be many unknown things beneath the water.

Wat Ahong Silawat: Peace and Mekong River Viewpoint You Must Visit

Wat Ahong Silawat is located in Kai Si Subdistrict, Bueng Kan Province. The temple itself is not very large, but the surrounding atmosphere is filled with rare peace and natural beauty not often found in big cities. I, mr.hotsia, visited early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds. This place is perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle, sit quietly, watch the river flow, and capture beautiful views that are hard to find elsewhere.

From the temple, you can see the large Mekong River flowing calmly. Across the river is Laos with mountains stretching along the horizon. I recommend everyone take a walk along the riverbank and breathe in the fresh air to truly feel connected with nature.

Bueng Kan Province: A Small Province with Charm Waiting to Be Discovered

For those who have never traveled toBueng Kan Province,I can say this is a quiet province where most houses are old wooden homes along the Mekong River. The town is not large but has a simple charm that leaves a lasting impression. The province includes districts like Pak Khat, Seka, Bueng Khong Long, and others that blend nature with local culture perfectly.

Besides Wat Ahong, Bueng Kan also has other interesting attractions such asPhu Thok, which I have written about before. It is a thrilling viewpoint with challenging and beautiful cliffside stairs. Or the morning market full of local foods likeBueng Kan Rice Noodle Soup, which I like to stop by and taste when visiting here.

Connecting Thai-Lao Culture at Bueng Kan-Pak San Border Crossing

If you have time, I recommend crossing to the other side of the Mekong River atthe Bueng Kan-Pak San border crossing, which takes only 10-20 minutes by boat. This spot reflects the culture and lifestyle of the Lao people closely connected with the Thai. I, mr.hotsia, have crossed over to visit the Lao side, saw the fresh market, and heard the famous song “Kularb Pak San” there. It is an experience many Thais may not have tried yet.

Travel Tips and Advice from mr.hotsia

I recommend using a private car or hiring a taxi from Bueng Kan town to Wat Ahong because public transport on this route is infrequent. The trip takes about 30 minutes. But if you enjoy adventure and want to experience local life, renting a bicycle is also a good option.

Don’t forget to bring a hat or umbrella for sun protection and drinking water, as there are few shops or water points near the temple. If you like photography, I can assure you this place is a paradise for lovers of natural and Mekong River views.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

For me, Wat Ahong is not just an ordinary tourist spot. It is a place that makes you feel the great power of nature and the peaceful life along the Mekong River. This is another corner that anyone visitingBueng Kan Provinceshould not miss. Besides seeing the deepest part of the Mekong River, you also get to experience the culture, lifestyle, and natural beauty rarely found in big cities.

If you come to Bueng Kan, don’t forget to visit Wat Ahong Silawat for peace of mind. I guarantee you will take home unforgettable photos and feelings.
