Ton Takob Restaurant Chainat: A river fish food paradise on the Chao Phraya River by mr.hotsia

Chainat, a small province by the Chao Phraya River where I, mr.hotsia, have childhood memories from field trips to Chainat Bird Park. Today, I returned seriously and discovered the true deliciousness of Chao Phraya River fish at Ton Takob, a famous restaurant in Chainat that I highly recommend everyone to try.

If you have ever readChainat Travel Informationwhere I described the beauty of Chainat city and the charm of the Chao Phraya River, you might understand how fresh and diverse the fish here are, especially those caught at the end of the Chao Phraya Dam, a water source with seasonal water level changes. During the flood season, there are many fish; during the dry season, they are easier to catch but you must find the right place and time.

Why Ton Takob Restaurant?

Ton Takob is located not far from the fish market at the end of the Chao Phraya Dam, where I once strolled through the lively market selling various river fish such as croaker, climbing perch, and mackerel at reasonable prices (Read more about the fish market at the end of the Chao Phraya Dam). This restaurant has been open for over 10 years, with the owner still committed to using only fresh fish from the Chao Phraya River, which is the key to the unique deliciousness of the food here.

I arrived at Ton Takob right at opening time, 10 AM, to avoid the crowd and choose the freshest fish first. I ordered several dishes I wanted to try, including young fish topped with spicy chili sauce that was flavorful and matched the tender fish meat, crispy morning glory salad that was truly fresh and crunchy, and boiled climbing perch with dipping sauce which definitely wouldn't taste the same if not eaten fresh from the dam. Chainat-style Pad Thai was another dish I enjoyed, with a rich flavor. The stir-fried spicy mackerel was a bit tough, but overall it exceeded expectations for a restaurant open from morning until late afternoon (closing around 5:30 PM).

Atmosphere and Lifestyle by the Chao Phraya Dam

After a satisfying lunch, I took a walk along the Chao Phraya River flowing through Chainat, a scene that evokes nostalgia and allows one to truly absorb the lifestyle of the local people here. The route from Chainat city to Ton Takob passes through the bustling fish market at the dam in the morning, a stop for fresh fish shopping for vendors and tourists wanting to try river fish at affordable prices.

If you have time or want to deeply experience Chainat’s local lifestyle, I recommend walking around the fish market, trying food at Ton Takob, then enjoying a cold coffee atDoi Chang Coffee Shop Chainatwhich is not far away. I remember the coffee here is strong and the air conditioning is cool and comfortable, perfect for relaxing after a full meal.

Travel Tips and Advice from mr.hotsia

For those coming from Bangkok, traveling to Chainat is not difficult. Just turn left about ten kilometers before reaching Chainat city, then follow the route along the Chao Phraya River to reach the fish market at the dam and Ton Takob conveniently.

If you come in the morning, the fish market at the end of the Chao Phraya Dam is very lively with a wide variety of fresh fish to choose from to take home or give to relatives. The fish prices here are much cheaper than markets in big cities. If you love fresh freshwater fish, I strongly recommend stopping by the fish market before going to Ton Takob to get the full experience.
