Ton Takob Restaurant, Chainat: A paradise for fish lovers from the Chao Phraya Dam

When talking about Chainat, a province where the Chao Phraya River flows through and is full of simple yet charming riverside lifestyles, I, mr.hotsia, must say that tasting fresh fish dishes from the Chao Phraya Dam is an absolute must. And the restaurant I want to recommend this time isTon Takob RestaurantA restaurant located not far from the fish market at the end of the Chao Phraya Dam, easy to get to and with boldly flavorful dishes

Chainat is a province I have visited often, whether for traveling totourist attractions in Chainat provinceor stopping by to seethe fish market at the end of the Chao Phraya DamA bustling fish market and a hub for fresh river fish caught by locals from the dam’s end, making it easy to enjoy authentic fish from the Chao Phraya River. Ton Takob Restaurant is one of the places that carefully uses these fresh ingredients to prepare their dishes.

Atmosphere and Getting There

Ton Takob Restaurant is located about 1 kilometer past the fish market at the end of the dam, on the way to the Chao Phraya Dam. Anyone who has been to Chainat will know this area as the point where water flows from the dam and offers a beautiful riverside atmosphere. Although the restaurant looks simple, it is filled with warmth and friendliness from the owner and staff. It is open from 10 AM until about 5 PM. I personally wish it stayed open later because the evening riverside atmosphere combined with delicious food would be perfect.

Must-Try Dishes According to mr.hotsia

Upon arriving at Ton Takob, I didn’t hesitate to order several dishes to share. Starting with “Soft Fish with Chili Sauce,” where the fish meat is tender and fresh, topped with a spicy sauce fragrant with chili and authentic Thai herbs. Next was the “Crispy Morning Glory Salad,” truly crispy with a perfectly balanced sweet and sour dressing that was very refreshing. The highlight for me was the “Boiled Pla Kang with Dipping Sauce,” because only fresh fish from the dam can show how different the crisp and bouncy texture is compared to ordinary fish. The dipping sauce served complements the fish perfectly, enhancing its flavor.

Additionally, I tried the “Chainat-style Pad Thai,” with chewy noodles, rich sauce, and complete ingredients. The “Spicy Stir-fried Pla Ma” I ordered was flavorful but the fish meat was a bit tough, which is understandable since this type of fish has firmer flesh than Pla Kang. However, for those who like bold flavors, this dish is still very appealing.

Affordable Prices and Freshness from the Chao Phraya Dam

Regarding prices, I find Ton Takob Restaurant very reasonable considering the quality and freshness of the ingredients, especially the fish from the end of the Chao Phraya Dam, which is a source of diverse fish at much lower prices than general markets. I have previously written aboutthe fish market at the end of the Chao Phraya Damas a market that attracts both tourists and locals because besides seeing the local lifestyle, it is also a place to buy fresh fish at affordable prices.

Riverside Lifestyle and Connection with River Fish

Chainat is not only about delicious restaurants but also a city deeply connected with the Chao Phraya River lifestyle. Sitting and eating at Ton Takob by the dam allowed me to experience the atmosphere of locals who still live simply and are truly connected with nature. Here, the water from the Chao Phraya Dam flows calmly, and looking out at the river in the evening reveals a beautiful reflection of the orange sky. This scene reminded me of fond memories from when I visited Chainat on a school trip as a child (Chainat Travel Information)

Recommended to stop by a coffee shop before or after your meal

If anyone wants a place to relax before or after eating, I, mr.hotsia, recommend Doi Chang Coffee Shop, which is not far from Ton Takob Restaurant (Doi Chang Coffee Shop, Chainat). It offers cool air conditioning and WIFI, with good coffee, perfect for chilling comfortably before heading back to enjoy the delicious food at Ton Takob.
