Traveling the 3 Southern Border Provinces 10/15: Salted Beef Rice in Narathiwat, Ao Manao, and Driving Around the City
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today we arrive at episode 10 of the “Traveling the 3 Southern Border Provinces” trip. This time, I intend to take everyone to taste the local specialty, salted beef ricefamous inNarathiwatalong with showing the beauty ofAo Manaoand driving around the lively city full of interesting stories.
Starting with Narathiwat salted beef rice
When talking about Narathiwat, most people might think of the sea and tranquility, but what I want to share is the story of a rare but delicious local dish,Narathiwat beef riceor what locals call “salted beef rice.”
I traveled into the fresh market area of Narathiwat city early in the morning. The atmosphere was bustling with vendors selling fresh ingredients and local food. I headed straight to my usual salted beef rice shop that I had tried before. The shop had a simple but very friendly atmosphere. Customers ranged from locals to tourists who stopped by.
The salted beef rice here is served with salted boiled beef marinated with special spices until tender and fragrant. It comes with a rich, flavorful broth served alongside hot steamed rice. I took my first bite; the taste was slightly salty but not overpowering, balanced with the sweetness of the beef and the aroma of spices absorbed into the rice. It’s an easy-to-eat dish that hides a profound depth of flavor perfectly. For those interested, you can check the details.Narathiwat beef ricethat I have written about before.
Continuing the journey to Ao Manao
After enjoying the salted beef rice, I drove out of Narathiwat city heading to Ao Manao, a famous beach in this province. Driving along the southern coastline here gave me a feeling of peace and the raw beauty of nature. The sea was clear with a blue-green hue, the sky wide, and the sea breeze cool and refreshing.
Ao Manao is not crowded with tourists like other famous beaches. It is perfect for those who enjoy tranquility and want to experience the true seaside atmosphere. I strolled along the beach, listened to the waves, and observed locals engaged in simple small-scale fishing.
Besides the natural beauty, Ao Manao also has small restaurants serving fresh seafood. I didn’t miss the chance to taste the seafood dishes here. The fresh, sweet flavors from the southern sea made this trip even more enjoyable.
Driving around Narathiwat city
After relaxing by the sea, I drove back into Narathiwat city to explore the lifestyle and atmosphere of this southern border town. My impression was that this city has cultural diversity and charm hidden in every alley.
I stopped by the fresh market again in the afternoon. The city market in Narathiwat offers a wide variety of fresh produce, including vegetables, fruits, and seafood freshly caught from the boats. I talked with vendors about their stories and daily lives, witnessing the warmth and friendliness of the people. Although this area has had news of unrest in the past, today the city is filled with hope and smiles.
There is also a small coffee shop in the city where I stopped to rest. The coffee here is strong with the aroma of Robusta coffee grown in the southern region. I sipped coffee while watching people pass by—a scene that calms the mind and makes me feel connected to the local way of life.
Summary and impressions from Narathiwat
My trip to Narathiwat as mr.hotsia was not only about tastingNarathiwat beef soupand the famous salted beef rice but also experiencing the natural beauty of Ao Manao and gaining a deep understanding of the lifestyle and stories of the local people, which are sometimes overlooked in the broader picture of Thailand.
Narathiwat is not just a southern border province associated with negative news. It is full of cultural charm, unique cuisine, and the warmth of its people, which made me return home with a smile and wonderful memories. I will definitely come back again and encourage everyone to open their hearts and experience it for themselves.
