Stroll along Ubon Ratchathani Walking Street with mr.hotsia

When talking about walking streets in Lower Isan, one of the destinations I, mr.hotsia, often recommend and revisit is Ubon Ratchathani Walking Street. It is open every Friday and Saturday from around 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The atmosphere is very lively because it is located besideThung Si Mueang Parkon the side of the Nine-Story Hotel, which is an area locals use daily for relaxation and exercise.

Ubon Walking Street is not like typical tourist markets that focus only on traditional souvenirs or local products. Here, it feels fresh and youthful, with fashionable clothing and modern home decor items to enjoy shopping for. Additionally, there are traditional Isan cultural performances, such as children playing the phin (a traditional lute) by the roadside, or my favorite, sitting and listening toauthentic Mor Lamwhich is a charming folk art that is rare to find in other cities.

Food and authentic Ubon local eats zone

Speaking of Ubon Walking Street, what I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend most is to stroll through the food zone. Here, you can find dishes that many people may have never tried before, especially the Ubon-style fried meatballs, freshly fried and eaten standing by the roadside, dipped in a special dipping sauce unique to true Ubon locals. I love watching this way of eating because it’s not just about the taste, but it’s a way to experience the lifestyle and culture of the locals. If you want more, just ask for extra fried meatballs, and when paying, you pay according to how many sticks you ate without having to go to the cashier. This is the fun and charm of Ubon’s night market that is hard to find in other cities.

Besides fried meatballs, the walking street offers many other foods, from local desserts and spicy Isan dishes to unique snacks I have encountered, such asVietnamese pizzawhich is a snack made from crispy fried rice crackers topped with Vietnamese-style steamed rice flour crepes and various fillings. If you visit Talat Yai Market in Ubon, you must try it.

The special atmosphere by Thung Si Mueang Park

Ubon Walking Street is located besideThung Si Mueang Parkwhich is a green space in the city center surrounded by a moat. Thung Si Mueang is one of Ubon Ratchathani’s charms where you can see locals exercising, playing takraw, basketball, or just strolling leisurely in the evening. This makes walking the street at night feel like being part of the community, not just a tourist spot.

I, mr.hotsia, once sat watching children playing the phin by the roadside with Mor Lam music echoing at night. It felt like traveling into the true world of Isan culture, not just a performance but a real life that still continues in this big city.

Convenient travel and recommended accommodations

Don’t worry about transportation because Ubon Ratchathani now has much more convenient transport systems. In the past, Ubon might have seemed far or difficult to reach, but now there are direct flights from many cities, including a new route connecting directly to Phuket, making traveling to Ubon much easier (read more atUbon-Phuket Flights: Travel from Isan to the South without Bangkok)

For accommodations, I recommend choosing the area near Thung Si Mueang Park because it’s very convenient for walking to the walking street and other city attractions. I, mr.hotsia, suggest booking in advance on Fridays and Saturdays when the walking street is open, as accommodations tend to fill up quickly, and many hotels offer reasonable prices for the services provided.

Stop by to taste soy milk and Ubon-style breakfast

If you wake up early in Ubon, don’t miss the chance to try the special soy milk recipe I wrote about in the articleThe Best Soy Milk in Ubon Ratchathani Provincebecause here they have a soy milk recipe with tofu foam and pomelo peel, adding fragrance and a unique taste different from elsewhere. Also, there is a long-established rice porridge restaurant popular among locals calledTi Amnuay Chokwhich I have visited since my Air Force days and still maintains its original taste very well.

Summary of the Ubon Walking Street experience with mr.hotsia

Ubon Ratchathani Walking Street is not just an ordinary night market but a window into the true life and culture of Ubon people. I, mr.hotsia, love the variety of products and food, as well as the atmosphere that perfectly blends modernity and tradition. Walking around, listening to Mor Lam, and eating fried meatballs standing by the roadside here is an experience that makes me feel that "If you come to Ubon, you must visit the walking street" truly.

If you have the chance, I recommend planning a trip to Ubon on a Friday or Saturday evening, spending several hours strolling, tasting food, and experiencing the local lifestyle. I guarantee you will take home unique memories. mr.hotsia
