Giant Tokiya Snack of Nakhon Phanom, a must-try riverside delicacy
When talking about Nakhon Phanom, many people think of the charm along the Mekong River, the sacred Phra That Phanom, or the atmosphere of the Indochina Market full of food and cultural fusion. But for me,mr.hotsiaone of the unforgettable highlights not to miss is the “Giant Tokiya” of Nakhon Phanom, which I personally tried at the Nakhon Phanom Walking Street.
The Nakhon Phanom Walking Street is a hub of diverse foods, including local dishes, Isan cuisine, and unique local desserts found only here. As I strolled, the fresh aroma of the giant Tokiya being fried caught my nose, and I couldn’t resist lining up to taste it.
A big-sized Tokiya unlike any I’ve seen before
The giant Tokiya of Nakhon Phanom is unlike the usual Tokiya sold in Bangkok or other provinces because it is much larger, about the size of my palm. The batter is crispy on the outside and soft inside, with a distinct aroma of egg and butter used for frying. Inside, there are various fillings to choose from, including egg, shredded pork, cream, and my favorite, sweet red bean filling that is perfectly balanced—not overly sweet. The first bite was so delicious that I had to buy another piece.
Another special feature of the giant Tokiya of Nakhon Phanom is the use of local ingredients that create a unique flavor. I spoke with one vendor who said the batter is a special recipe mixed with rice flour and fresh eggs from nearby farms, resulting in a batter that is both soft and crispy at the same time. It has become a snack loved by both locals and tourists.
Riverside atmosphere with giant Tokiya
After holding the giant Tokiya in my hand, I walked to the Mekong riverside not far from the walking street, sat down to enjoy the view of the Laos side with limestone mountains stretching in the background, accompanied by a cool breeze. It was a truly delightful moment. Eating delicious snacks with such a beautiful view is the charm of Nakhon Phanom that I want everyone to experience.
If you want to stroll around before or after tasting the giant Tokiya, I recommend exploringNakhon Phanom Walking Streetwhich offers a variety of foods and souvenirs, or you can cross over to visit the Laos side at Tha Khaek throughthe Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge connecting Nakhon Phanom and Tha Khaekwhich is another impressive experience.

How to travel to Nakhon Phanom
Nakhon Phanom is located along the Mekong River, opposite Tha Khaek city in Laos. Getting there is not difficult. I,mr.hotsiatraveled from Bangkok by comfortable bus. If you prefer driving, there are main roads well connected to the city center. Importantly, this year theThird Mekong Friendship Bridgehas opened, linking Thailand and Laos at Nakhon Phanom and Tha Khaek, making travel between the two sides of the Mekong much more convenient. It’s perfect for those who want to visit both countries in one trip.
