Walking Street Nakhon Phanom: A walking street full of life and the sound of the phin

When talking about the walking street or night market of Nakhon Phanom, many might just picture local food stalls and general merchandise. But for me, mr.hotsia, who had the chance to experience it firsthand, this walking street has much more to offer. Nakhon Phanom, a small province by the Mekong River connected to Thakhek in Laos, charms with its simplicity yet is rich in culture and the life stories of the local people.

One evening, I strolled along this night walking street. The lights from shops brightly lined both sides of the road, creating a warm atmosphere even at night. What caught my attention more than the food stalls or merchandise was the "sound of the phin" played by a blind wandering musician who performed with lively spirit. His delicate and unique phin playing made me stop and listen for hours until he finished. The phin music was not just ordinary sound but conveyed the lifestyle here—the patience and hope every night when this market opens.

Variety of Food and Souvenirs at the Walking Street

Walking Street Nakhon Phanom offers a wide variety of local foods to taste, starting with the famous steamed rice skin dumplings of the province, which I have previously written about.Srithep Nakhon Phanom Steamed Rice Skin DumplingsFresh steamed rice skin dumplings made from a traditional recipe with soft dough wrapped around pork or shrimp filling as preferred, topped with a rich dipping sauce that makes every bite delicious enough to buy several boxes to take home.

Additionally, there is the spicy stir-fried pork with holy basil from Nakhon Phanom, made with fresh local ingredients, which I have recorded in a video.Nakhon Phanom Stir-Fried Pork with Holy Basil Street FoodThis is another dish not to be missed when visiting this market.

Other foods sold at the market include homemade grilled chicken, fragrant charcoal-grilled Mekong fish, and local desserts that anyone who loves traditional sweets will adore. There are also local souvenirs such as Urenu Nakhon liquor, which I have written about.Urenu Nakhon Liquor (2014)A local liquor carefully made by the Phu Thai people. Urenu liquor here has a unique character and is part of the local culture.

Riverside Lifestyle at Walking Street Nakhon Phanom

The walking street is not just a place for selling goods and food but also a social space for locals and tourists of various nationalities visiting Nakhon Phanom. I saw families, working villagers, students, and young people sitting, eating, and chatting in a friendly manner.

At some spots in the market, there are small traditional performances and live phin music as I mentioned earlier, which I enjoyed the most because the phin’s sound tells the stories of the people here more deeply than anything else.

The atmosphere by the Mekong River, not far from this market, allowed me to rest my eyes on the beautiful limestone mountains on the Laos side stretching in a long row. This place combines peaceful natural beauty with the activities of the city’s people perfectly.

Summary of the Walking Street Nakhon Phanom Experience by mr.hotsia

For me, walking around the Walking Street Nakhon Phanom was not just ordinary eating and traveling but a deep experience of the culture, lifestyle, and stories of the local people here. The lively phin music played by the blind wandering musician is an unforgettable image, and tasting the diverse local foods made me feel warmly at home.
