Missing Mom, Returning Home to Bang Bo 11/15: Eating Beef Curry, Pik Ka Pad Thai, Pik Ka Floating Market
Bang Bo, Samut Prakan Province, my hometown mr.hotsia, deeply connected with the canal-side lifestyle and nature here. Although I travel all over, Bang Bo remains the place I miss the most. This return home is to fill my memories with original flavors and an atmosphere that can't be found anywhere else.
Starting the morning at Pik Ka Floating Market, located along Samrong Canal, the waterway that has driven the lives of Bang Bo locals for a long time. This market still preserves the traditional floating market style completely, with villagers paddling boats selling fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, or local foods hard to find in big cities. Pik Ka Floating Market is like a place where I return to my childhood memories of boating with my family.
Today, I intend to eat homemade-style beef curry at a riverside shop my mother often took me to as a child. This beef curry is not ordinary; it uses a rich curry paste with the aroma of Thai herbs. The flavor is mild and homey, needing no extra seasoning. It was so delicious that I sat eating every last bite unwilling to leave.
After recharging with beef curry, I strolled to Pik Ka Pad Thai, a small shop by the floating market famous for its traditional Pad Thai recipe. This Pad Thai differs from others by using Chan noodles stir-fried with the vendor's special sauce. It’s perfectly dry, not greasy, with a balanced sweet, sour, and salty taste mixed with large fresh shrimp and crushed roasted peanuts sprinkled on top. This Pik Ka Pad Thai flavor reminded me of childhood times during temple fairs or festivals at the old Bang Phli market.150-Year-Old Bang Phli Old Marketwhich is not far from my home
Walking around Pik Ka Floating Market is not just about food. I also witnessed the simple and warm lifestyle of locals here. Villagers paddle boats to sell goods, merchants exchange stories amidst bird songs and flowing water. These are memories hard to replace anywhere else.
Bang Bo is not only about food and floating markets but also famous nationwide for its pla salid fish.Bang Bo Pla Salidwhich I grew up with. Its legendary delicious taste comes from the brackish water of Samrong Canal that supports red worm growth, a favorite food of pla salid, making Bang Bo pla salid meat firm and plumper than other areas.
My bond with Bang Bo is so deep that I have witnessed traditional lifestyles like catching 'Ai Ngo' fish traps and even boat races held on special occasions.Ai Ngo Fish Trap Competition with Mr. Hotsia On Tour, Bang Bois another experience I want to share because it truly shows the relationship between people, nature, and water here.
This trip for me, mr.hotsia, is not just about eating or traveling but about returning to fill memories of my hometown and telling the story of a community that beautifully preserves its identity and traditional way of life.
If anyone wants to experience a genuine floating market atmosphere, taste beef curry fragrant with curry paste, and traditional Pad Thai hard to find in big cities, I recommend visiting Pik Ka Floating Market and Bang Bo at least once. I believe the warmth and home-style flavors will make you miss your home and loved ones just like me.
